EMERGENCY!! - 2007/10/22 15:15 ok ive been planning on buying a sterilite cage from my breeder but i just realized something!! i have a almost 2 year old nephew that lives with us just had to replace my rat cage because he stood on the lid and it broke through(screen lid) so what it the best option i have?!?! and i have to put it on the floor because as of now we dont really have any safe high places because he could pull it off!but would they be a safe hazard to getting a rabbit cage like thing because he could put stuff in there through the bars...i know im in a bit of a pickle but i really need some advice!!

Re:EMERGENCY!! - 2007/10/22 16:27 Your best bet would probably be to supervise your nephew around animals or put the animals somewhere he can't get at. Is that a possibility? Ann

Re:EMERGENCY!! - 2007/10/22 16:50 my rats are in a better cage now that he cant break.the thing is the hedgehog will have to be in the living room because it gets WAY to cold in our rooms to keep her there.im just being causious because its not like someone is watching him every second thats how he broke my rat cage.i decided im going to get a M-something(cant remember)rabbit cage from petco.i think that would be the safest!and i heard very good reviews!!

Re:EMERGENCY!! - 2007/10/22 18:52 You are thinking of a Marchioro cage. They are great, but the top does swing up to open, so I imagine with enough pressure that it might be able to swing downward. You could try putting a small padlock on the door of the cage so that couldn't happen.

Or maybe put one of those eye hook locks on the door to the room where the hedgehog lives so that your nephew can't get in without supervision.

Re:EMERGENCY!! - 2007/10/22 21:41 I'd buy a space heater for your room and keep her in there - my hedgehogs safety is far to important to me to hope a padlock or clip will keep him safe from a 30+ pound child. I have cousins who were always curious about him - so I bought a space heater and keep him in my room with the door shut and the heater on.

Re:EMERGENCY!! - 2007/10/23 14:42 I have the cat problem too - two cat problems to be exact =/ they just learned that they can go in when the younger cousin isn't around. (in your case I'd assume it'd be when your nephew went to bed...)

Re:EMERGENCY!! - 2008/01/24 18:28 hmm ok... I wouldn't slap the kid per-say but an animals are off limits or you have to sit in the naughty corner if you are caught fussing with them or their things unsupervised policy would probably be a better option.

don't some of the M cages come with stands? That would be a good option. High enough he can't climb on it but I imagine if you weight the frame down he couldn't pull it down on himself either?...

Re:EMERGENCY!! - 2008/01/27 12:22 Yes, I got a stand with my Marchioro cage (think it was called a Robin 120).

The stand is really sturdy so I doubt that he would be able to pull it down. Plus it comes with a handy shelf as well.
