Scaling a C&C cage? - 2008/02/21 11:47 Am I the only one who has a hedgie who can scale the 14" walls of a C&C cage? Chai left his cage this AM, and I have no idea how

Its not like there was much in there to climb on....and there was at least a good 8-10 inches above anything he could climb on in there, and nothing looked as if it was stacked up....so I'm just curious if I have a monkey on my hands? I still am shocked he got out of his cage!

Re:Scaling a C&C cage? - 2008/02/21 14:26 Hedgies can be very good climbers. You will want a top on the cage if you don't want escapes. Did you find him yet? Ann

Re:Scaling a C&C cage? - 2008/02/22 08:22 We tore our room upside down and he found himself some really secret hiding place -- we never did find where he hid....but right after dinner he came running over to pick up some worms I left him What a brat he is

We put a cover on it last night so he couldn't get out. We tried to watch him for hours to see if he'd show us how he did it, but alas, its still a hidden talent of his

Oh, and nope, he's too big to fit through the squares....we did a "test fit" before we put him in there I just love the C&C cages -- they are so versatile and spacious...now if I can just make them secure, for good. Any ideas on a permanent top? Right now I'm just laying over some extra squares...but obviously you can't get your hand in if I put them on permanently.

BTW, these are C&C cages: http://www.guineapigcages.com/howto.htm

Re:Scaling a C&C cage? - 2008/02/22 10:46 Hedgehogs are mini Harry Houdini's. Harley got out of an empty plastic bin with rather high sides. You have to keep an eye on them. They can be very clever.

Re:Scaling a C&C cage? - 2008/02/22 21:56 We did a "test fit" with Ava when we first got her.
We held her up to the grids and said no... she can't fit. A few days later my boyfriend calls me at work and said "did you take the hedgie to work with you?" I thought he was insane.
He tore her cage apart and then the apartment apart... he found her asleep under the sofa!. He thought he hadn't shut the lid properly and she climb out but that night she got out and we found her behind the fridge and then she got out AGAIN and we found her behind the TV. We couldn't figure it out but that last time she got out we held her up to put her back in and she jumped out of my hands and wiggled her little body through one of the squares to run back into her igloo! I was SHOCKED to say the least. She was like a contortionist!

Re:Scaling a C&C cage? - 2008/02/22 22:15 I left my boyfriend home alone with Isabel. He had her in his lap while sitting on the couch. She decided she wanted to get inside the couch and jumped off his lap. He caught her rear end and tried to hold her back. At that point she stretched out like a ferret and managed to get the front half of her body into the couch! He said she was like a slinky and just kept getting longer and longer. It was like magic.

I suppose there is no limit what a hedge can do when he/she puts their prickly little minds to it.

A good way to 'test fit' is to measure your hedgie from one ear to the other - from the outside edges, unless your hedgie has huge ears! If the spacing of the cage is more than that width, then your hedgehog can fit out if he/she wants to.
