Heating Pads-Hibernation emergency - 2008/02/25 13:28 Hi, Just had a panic. Little Lychee was trying to hibernate we think! We had a cold snap last night and although he was rousable at 08:00am (when I got home, I checked up on him) he wasn't at 06:00pm at all. He just stayed in a ball which was unusual as he's normally a bit grouchy but after 30 seconds and a couple of poops he's happy. We obviously need a heat pad (when I checked his cage was at 64F). There is a post lower down with this one being sited as good Sunbeam Health at Home Easy To Use King Size Moist/Dry Heating Pad which is a human one, what other brands/types should I be looking at? and what functions should I be looking for? (I saw auto off was undesirable). I am going to look thought the posts but with the emergency tonight I want to get one as quickly as possible and not sure if I'll get enough research done. Thanks

Edited:

First Lychee is happy now, asleep with his quills down being stroked.

I've done some looking round and I think we'll probably go with a "human" type heated blanket. Now I read that you can't put your cage on the blanket there has to be a space, is this correct? Also here in the UK I can't find one with no auto-off so I'm guessing if I put it on a timed plug and get it to switch it off then back on before the blankets auto-off kicks in the timer on the blanket will reset itself, anyone know if it will?

Re:Heating Pads-Hibernation emergency - 2008/02/25 14:36 you can try a ZooMed reptile heater which you can find at Petsmart or Petco. make sure to get the smallest size available. you want your hedgie to be able to move away from the "hot spot" if need be. i've never personally used one since i live in texas. but it's worth a try. maybe someone who lives in a colder area will be able to suggest something better? Re:Heating Pads-Hibernation emergency - 2008/02/25 14:44 Thanks Omlette, I think we're going to go with a heated blanket but we still need an idiots guide with what to do with it. If you can't put the cage on them it might have to be a reptile pad or ceramic heat emitter

Re:Heating Pads-Hibernation emergency - 2008/02/25 14:49 We use standard heating pads with a setting for 'stay on' so it doesn't go off on your hedgie.
Any of them will work, just stick it under his cage, set on low, and it should work really well for you.

Re:Heating Pads-Hibernation emergency - 2008/02/25 15:26 Thanks I'll get one tomorrow daytime (I'm working nights, pity I can't bring him in to play, us both being noctournal at the moment). There's a "magnetic" therapeutic one which has better heat controls, but would the "magnetic" bit upset him?

Re:Heating Pads-Hibernation emergency - 2008/02/25 19:04 I use a dog/cat heat pad that I got on ebay here in the u.k.

It doesn't get too hot and can go inside the cage (although I do put a fleece cover over mine so that the hedgehogs can't get in direct contact, just to be on the safe side). They are wipe clean as well which is definitely a plus.

I have one for each of my cages and they are on constantly at the moment, but they only cost a few pence a week in electricity.

Here's a link to one like mine-

Re:Heating Pads-Hibernation emergency - 2008/02/26 13:48 Thanks I've run out and got a Therapeutic Heating Pad for under the cage but now I know what sort of temperature it should be running at (seemed a bit weedy when I put it there) I'll have a play with it tomorrow, probably encomapnied by lots of huffing for moving his cage.

Re:Heating Pads-Hibernation emergency - 2008/02/26 14:51 Well he seems happy enough now, apparently he's led on his belly under the log in a Super Hedgie position!
