help please! - 2008/02/29 15:15 I am getting my first hedgehog on thursday, im am so excited!

my new baby is a little salt and pepper coloured girl.

I have a huge indoor rabbit cage with a fleece liner, snuggle pouch, igloo, litter pan, wheel, toys and drainage pipes.

I willl be feeding a mix of purina, eukanuba, iams and pro plan cat food, with meal worms. I might occasionally feed wet cat food, although i know its bad for their teeth so it wont be often.

My main question is what heat source should i buy? the room she will be living in is never 75 degrees and i dont really want the central heating on all the time.

I am confused over heat bulbs, mats and heat fans???

i would really prefer a heat source that just warms her cage as opposed to the whole room.

Please help!

Different hedgehogs have different temperature tolerances. A lot also depends on your room they are in.

If they are in a small room, a space heater can work.

For a cage, you can use a reptile or hermit crab heater under the cage. Get the smallest size and be sure there is ventilation underneath using the little feet that come with it.

Under the cage, you can also use a human heat pad set to low. Make sure it does not have an auto off feature.

A ceramic heat emitter bulb can work in a cage too. If you use this you want a thermostat to control the heat.

You also want a thermometer so that you know if the temp changes near the cage. That may be the most important thing to have. Ann

Re:help please! - 2008/03/01 12:55 A ceramic heat emitter or a space heater is best. A heating pad is not enough. It doesn't warm the air, just to bottom of the cage. A ceramic heat emitter is like a light bulb that only gives off heat. It comes in different wattages, just like bulbs. I personally use them and I think they work pretty well. and they only heat the area around the cage, instead of the whole room.

Re:help please! - 2008/03/01 17:35 I use a heat emitter on top of her cage and a reptile heater underneath her sleeping area.That way if Hazel gets too warm she can go to another area in her cage. (usually under her wheel)A space heater (in my opinion, of course) would heat the whole room and add alot to the electric bill! Living in CT we have to think of those things. The cost of living is sooo high.

We turn our heat down low in at night and during the day when we are not home, and her cage always stays between 75 and 80 degrees.(I do have some cardboard around some sides for the nighttime, It's cold here in New England!!I guess we will have to rethink our strategy come spring and summer.
