Temperatures - 2008/05/11 07:01 Hi all, I am a new hedgehog owner. I got my new baby, Shelby, from Kelly at Hamor Hollow yesterday and she is awesome!

The temperature got down to 71 last night where her cage is. Is this ok? I had read that 73 was the minimum. There is a light on her cage during the day to boost the temp a bit but I dont think I will have to use that aside from a couple hours in the morning now that summer is on its way. What about red lighting at night? It is commonplace to use red lighting for reptiles as supposedly they cannot see the red spectrum (not sure I like this idea). I thought I would ask about the possibility of red lighting at night for hedgies. Something tells me this is a bad idea but...

Thanks!
Carole

Re:Temperatures - 2008/05/11 08:47 I like to keep the room that my hedgie is in above 70 degrees. I also have a heating pad for her in her cage. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:Temperatures - 2008/05/11 08:56 The temperature got down to 71 last night where her cage is. Is this ok? The minimum depends on the hedgehog. Some would be fine at 71 and others will be too cold. Just keep an eye in your hedgehog and your thermometer for the first few weeks and you will get an idea of what is fine for your hedgehog Ann

Re:Temperatures - 2008/05/12 12:57 Peanut is often around 68 degrees and I haven't had a problem yet. I read that older hedgehogs need to be kept warmer but I don't know if that's true. Becky

Re:Temperatures - 2008/05/12 20:39 Hello and Welcome Carole!

Temp is very important for hedgehog but each one varies slightly in what they can tolerate. A young, skinny, sick, fragile or older hedge seems to like it warmer but a hardy hedge can handle a bit cooler room. The best way to know if you hedge is too cold is to pick her up. If Shelby is limp, her belly is cold or she is cool and doesn't make an effort to ball up than she is too cold. You can catch this before it goes this far by just noticing her belly fur is a bit chilled. This could happen at 65 degrees or 74 even!

I would keep an eye on her and have a heating pad ready in case she does seem chilled. I use this rule of thumb. My boyfriend has informed me that because I am female I have unnaturally cold feet. I've noticed if my feet are cold than the hedgies probably are chilly too. Once you know what Shelby likes you can mark it on the thermometer and go from there. I know for me my feet are a great indicator. They get chilly the moment the temp dips below 70. LOL!
