Travel - 2008/04/10 13:25 So my boyfriend lives about an hour away and I usually go there every other weekend. Do you think its best to leave Peanut home with extra food or take her with me. Will the trip stress her out? If I were to bring her with me I would get a second cage to leave there.

ps. This is minor but she has been living with me for three days and i've only found 2 poops. She ate almost all of the food I left her but its not coming out the other end. Do they get constipated? Should I give her something fibery? What is good to add for fiber? Becky

Even if she is fine at home alone and you have her lights on a timer and heat on thermostat control, you'll be worrying all the time about what if her water spilled? What about her poopy wheel? What if the electricity goes out and she's too hot (estivation --> death) or cold (hibernation --> death)? What if she tries to climb and gets hurt? What if, what if, what if!!!

2 poops is better than no poops; if she's in shavings or another substrate, it's possible her poops are hidden.

Yes, hedgies can get constipated. Best home remedy that I've read about is unflavored pumpkin - the stuff you buy in a can from which to make pies. I've wondered if sweet potato or squash (the baby food varieties) would work similarly well <-- anyone know about that?

Re:Travel - 2008/04/11 07:38 Good news! I found lots of poops last night. I guess the first couple of days she was just shy. And they were al under her wheel in a little pile. maybe she is neat... or maybe she just pooped them all at the same time

Re:Travel - 2008/04/11 15:48 I travel a good bit with my hedgehog. I haven't yet with my new baby Harley but my previous girl, Isabel, traveled with me everywhere! My mom and boyfriend have hedgehog cages and set ups at their homes so all I need is a bag of food and the toys. I seat belt a ten gallon fish tank into the car, fill the tank with Carefresh, a toilet paper tube and I have a water bottle and food dish I put out when I stop or when the hedge has been a bit without access to food or water. I keep a small towel handy in case I need to lay it over the tank to keep out bright sunlight. And I keep the radio down low, as little hedgie ears are sensitive.

They are so easy to travel with. I've driven 20 hour trips with no problems. Though I have had fast food drive through workers spot the hedgehog then ask if they can PET her!
