new hedgehog owner - 2008/04/10 22:51 Hi
Just picked up my hedgehog,Wasabi, from Stasi on Sunday. Although he is a little grumpy we are not afraid and continue to pick him up and try to interact with him twice a day. He has his good and bad days. He eats well. I assume he drinks since the water level moves down. Although I imagine it could be evaporation from the space heater we use. My question is that I cannot seem to interest him in any treats. In all honesty I have not bought any mealworms yet but I have tried a number of other hedgehog recommended treats and he does not even bother to acknowledge it. I would like to use the treats as a way of establishing some level of trust. Any suggestions on what I can entice him with? Do all hedgehogs enjoy treats? His enjoyment now is to poop on my bed! What else can compare!

Re:new hedgehog owner - 2008/04/11 00:27 Not much compares to pooping on the bed... Except maybe peeing on the couch.

Ava loves mealies. She doesn't like most hedgie recommended treats but crickets and mealies are always devoured. We used some of the canned crickets when we first brought her home as bribes. They're not very nutrious and shouldn't be anything more than an occasional treat but she reacted to them like I react to good cannolies!

Or peeing all over the Comcast guys' leg. Well, that was Cotton anyway . I would try bringing home some mealies. 2/3 of my hogs took to them right away, and the other grew up some (she was about six months or so) and found out she liked them. Cotton and Noodles didn't really eat other treats until they were more grown up, but they ALWAYS went for green pepper. I think the key is to just keep trying different things, and if the hog doesn't take to it at first, try again the next night. I just wouldn't be shoving tons of different foods in her bowl every night though.

Re:new hedgehog owner - 2008/04/11 10:03 Peanut wouldn't eat the chicken that I tried to give her. She actually huffed at like like a grumpyface. I put the chicken in her food dish so she could get used to it and so she knew it was food and she ate it. I tried later and then she liked it. If it is a new smell they need some time to even give it a chance and not be scared of it. I think she didn't even know it was food. You might want to try that Becky

Re:new hedgehog owner - 2008/04/11 15:03 I tried to attach a picture last time but I guess it must of been the wrong size. i will have to try to reformat or take some new ones. They are coming though. Today I went out and bought some freeze dried mealworms. I need to slowly work my way up to the live smelly refrigerated ones.

Re:new hedgehog owner - 2008/04/11 22:24 Omelette loves live mealworms, but she has no interest in crickets. Cooked chicken is another one of Omelette's favorites. Hedgehogs can be finicky little critters. Some may like one thing, while others may huff at it. So try different things. Cottage cheese, turkey, baby food, are all good things to try. Lisa
