Re:heating pads - 2008/04/14 10:31 Depends on what purpose...

If you're looking for a way to supplement your baby's heating, a regular human (not reptile) heating pad would work best. I have one that goes under my little one's cage for chilly post-bath nights.

Just keep in mind that a heating pad by itself isn't going to be enough if baby's house is cold (below 72F) - you'll need to heat the whole area so s/he can eat and drink and run and wheel and sleep at the right temperature.

Re:heating pads - 2008/04/14 11:04 I use one of the smaller reptile heating pads and a 6 watt heat emitter. In the real dead of winter I attached cardboard to the top and two sides of her cage (the back and the side towards a wall, that way it didn't affect her daily dose of light) and at night I put up blankets on the other two sides so she wouldn't get a chill. We turn our thermostat down to 62 degrees at night but her cage stays around 75 degrees. I would definitely get a small thermometer so you can see just how warm it really is in there! LORI, SOUTHINGTON, CT

Re:heating pads - 2008/04/14 17:01 Are heating pads or snuggle discs a necessity for hedgehogs? I don't use them and I have had no problems with Pickles. I keep my house at a constant 73 degrees year round. She sleeps in an igloo and has a BIG fleece blanket in there with her. ~Erin~

As long as your hedgie's environment is warm enough, you shouldn't need them under regular circumstances.

I use the heat pad (it's under her house) sometimes after a bath in winter (more for my own peace of mind than Satin's needs). I also use it to help heat her house back up more quickly when it's cold - like when I turn the heat emitters off because we've left for the night. <-- "we" meaning the humans and the hedgie. She has a smaller travel home in addition to her her big regular home, so we can shut things down at home.

I have snuggle safe disks too - I use them when it's cold out and we go traveling to help keep her warm. I also use them if it's a windy/stormy day and I'm concerned about the power cutting out. It give me some reassurance that she could snuggle up to them if the house lost heat.

I've seen them in pet stores (PetCo and Pet Supplies Plus), but they're always ridiculously priced... like $36. So I went on Amazon and bought two from one of their retailers for a lot less. Each one comes with a cover, but I got a couple extras too.

Re:heating pads - 2008/04/15 18:13 Does anyone have any problems just leaving a human heating pad on all the time? Aren't you afraid they are going to overheat? Becky

I have a human heating pad set on low for my hedgie. I haven't had a problem with it overheating. For awhile I was just using the snuggle safe discs, but it wasn't practical at all to use them all the time. I would always be heating them up again!

No. Actually, the only ones I could find have a safety feature and automatically turn off after an hour.

Re:heating pads - 2008/04/17 07:45 My heating pad as two options. It can turn off automatically, or it can be set to stay on all the time. I just leave it on all the time and turn it off when the room starts to get warm. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

I would recommend having one on hand even if you think your house is warm enough. Older hedgehogs and sick hedgehogs can start slipping into hibernation at higher temps then young healthy hedgehogs.

I prefer the reptile heating pads, and as long as the feet are used and you do not smother the pad, you shouldn't have to worry about over heating. Microwavable pads are great for travel, but tedious if you have to remember to heat them up every 8 hours. Human heating pads that shut off also aren't any good if they go cold.

Re:heating pads - 2008/04/18 19:23 I have a sick hedgie right now and I keep the pad on low all of the time. I found one that stays on and does not turn off automatically at Walmart. They are not so easy to find anymore. I check it regularly, but never worry about it.

Re:heating pads - 2008/04/18 21:42 The reptile heating pad works awesome for my hedgie. You can only get the mini reptile heater though because the others are not for use on plastic. Jhenna
