quilling is a nightmare - 2008/04/21 22:17 So I guess that Peanut has started quilling since she is 9 weeks old and very very very grouchy. She's never balled up on me completely before tonight and I have to say I am irrationally hurt. I wish I wasn't taking this so personally. Becky

Re:quilling is a nightmare - 2008/04/21 22:40 Get some Aveeno bath that almost any store. Open an envelope and put about 2T worth in some warm water in your sink. After you turn off the water, put hedgie in and let her swim. Use your hand or a cup to pour water over her back.

Let her stay in the sink (supervised) for about 5 mins. Then take her out, wrap her in a warm blanket, and cuddle till she is dry.

The Aveeno will help sooth the owies from quilling.

That's the way I do too! [I let her swim with me in the pool sometimes hahaha] I've come to the crazy hedgehog world, now I can say that it wasn't a hedgehog, it's my dog!!! My hedgehog never roll up, not because she's fat but she just never do that to anybody. I think your hedgehog too!, but you have to play with it everyday, so quilling is not a nightmare!!!

PS. after bath, I always let her sleep on my bed with me. [now my girlfriend said that I should marry a hedgehog ]

Re:quilling is a nightmare - 2008/04/22 10:35 Is it normal during quilling to not only be grouchy but be just all around skiddish. Since Sunday night she balls up and any movement or noise. In the first two weeks that I had her she didn't do that. All last week she would raise her forehead spines if there was a noise or I moved suddenly but she rarely put up all of her spines like she is doing now. She also didn't explore anything when I had her out but she ran in her wheel all night and ate all of her food.
I think maybe this is just bad timing. My grandfather died last week and now I feel like my new cuddly friend turned on me. It is irrational I know.

Re:quilling is a nightmare - 2008/04/22 11:05 Oh Aaria...I TOTALLY relate. I have been working hard at not personalizing things and everytime I think I am making progress in bonding, something unexpected happens and then I feel like I am starting all over again. And my feelings get hurt and I think ''my hedgie does not like me''. I am getting better with this but sometimes when I am tired or dealing with a lot, it is hard not to personalize things.

The only thing I can say is that quilling is normal and you will get through this and you are a wonderful hedgie mommy and peanut is very lucky to have you.

Andrea

PS: I am sorry for your loss.

Re:quilling is a nightmare - 2008/04/22 20:34 It's not irrational at all. My grandfather's funeral is this Sunday (he passed in February but we had to wait for the ground to thaw).

I've taken a lot of comfort in my four legged ones around here. Sometimes they're the only ones who truly "listen" so it can be hard for us when they're having a rough time of something on top of everything else.

Peanut will come around. Ava was a ball of grouchy needles for about a week and a half when she was quilling but the Aveeno bath really did help.

Re:quilling is a nightmare - 2008/04/22 22:14 CandJ327 I am sorry for your loss too.

On a happier note... Peanut was like her old self today I don't know what happened but she didn't huff at me when I picked her up and we explored my shelves and ate mealies and when anything scared her (like the tissue I used to pick up her poop) if I put my hand by her she always put down her spikes right away once she smelled me.
Now my question is Is she quilling? when we were playing yesterday I found 4 or 5 spikes in the towel I was holding her in. Today I didn't see her lose any. She is 9 weeks old so it has to happen some time right. When they are quilling do they lose all 8000 of their quills? That would take a really long time right.

You should be able to see new quills poking up through the skin

Re:quilling is a nightmare - 2008/04/23 21:29 Well this is embarrassing. There are no quills poking through her skin so I guess she isn't quilling yet. If this is how she is NORMALLY I can honestly say that I am not looking forward to quilling. It's got to happen soon right? Becky

Re:quilling is a nightmare - 2008/04/24 08:38 She is still dropping a lot of quills. Do you think she might have mites? I noticed a dry sort of buildup around the base of the quills. It kind of looks like the skin grew about 0.5 mm up the base of the quill. There is no dusty looking stuff. Her skin is maybe a little dry but its hard to tell because I don't know what it's supposed to look like. It's really hard to check it out because her quills are so dense! Becky

Re:quilling is a nightmare - 2008/04/24 19:27 I did see quills poking through the skin so she is quilling! I tried giving her a bath. I don't think its very soothing for her. I think she was traumatized very much. I also had a hard time cleaning her skin because her quills are just so dense that nothing gets down there. I also have to get a bucket she can't climb out of because that didn't work so well. it was hard enough scrubbing her with the tooth brush. Keeping her from jumping out really complicated things Becky

Re:quilling is a nightmare - 2008/04/25 10:25 Some hedgehogs quill gradually, so it is hard to notice the quills coming through. Some sneeze and blow out their entire "coat". Ok, not quite, but..... In the ones that quill rapidly it is easier to see the new quills, since there are sometimes more new quills coming in than there are old quills still there.
