leaky water bottle and eating TP tubes - 2008/04/27 09:47 My water bottle always leaks a little bit, but when I checked on Peanut this morning the entire bottle was empty and most of her bedding was soaked. Does anyone have any tips on how to prevent this. I tried a dish of water but she just pushed her bedding into it and then was dehydrated and had crispy poops. I just want her to be happy and not wet and cold.

The leaky water bottle also got the toilet paper tube wet and a big chunk of it was nibbled off. It's not in the cage so I'm assuming she ATE it! That can't be good. I don't want to take away her tube. Any tips?

Re:leaky water bottle and eating TP tubes - 2008/04/27 10:01 That's really strange. Is it possible that she somehow pushed something against the mouth bit of the water bottle so that it continued to pour water? If not, I agree with saabgirl9000 that a new bottle would be the best bet. Pets:
Timmy (M, neutered) and Smokey (F, spayed) the maine coon and something else rescue cats.
Aureus (Unknown, called He) the goldfish.
Pepper (F) and Briar (M) the hissing cockroaches.
4 Minnows, rescued from being live bait.
4 House crickets, the other 3 are MIA.

Re:leaky water bottle and eating TP tubes - 2008/04/27 10:28 If I were you I'd get the best looking bottle around. It may be a little more expensive but then you atleast know that it will always serve your hedgie well!!

Re:leaky water bottle and eating TP tubes - 2008/04/27 13:10 Check the seal on the water bottle and make sure it is in there properly. Sometimes they get moved around and that can make it leak Ann

Yeah usually there is a little black rubber ring that sits in the mouth of the water bottle where it screws onto the bottle to help keep out leaks- make sure that's still there. Cotton and Noodles have each done this once with their bedding- in their case the liner got pushed up against the nozzle and just soaked the liner. But the next night everything was fine. Once, the liner hadn't moved at all and the bottle was empty and the liner soaked... But that was like a freak incident because I still use the same water bottles, and it hasn't happened since. You might want to look into what kind of water bottle holder you have... If it's held on the cage by the metal ring they usually come with (that caused a lot of leaks for me!) I'd suggest getting an actual water bottle holder to help keep it stable.

Good luck!

Re:leaky water bottle and eating TP tubes - 2008/07/21 16:36 if your hedgehog runs a lot it could be that the shaking causes the ball thingy in the water bottle to move so it all leaks out. This would be especially true if its a hanging water bottle, or if its a bottle on the same wall the wheel is on (if its attached to the cage and not free-standing). but you're not the only one, i had this same problem :0)
