Hedgehog eating shavings? - 2005/03/01 23:40 Hey everyone,
My female hedgehog has eaten shavings since the day I got her. I took all the shavings out and made padded liners for her cage and she chews on that. What the heck is she doing. I've had her since November and she was supposed to be prego but didn't end up being. I have just introduced her to my male and hopefully will have babies.
I would prefer not to have a snappy remark made to me from a reply. I am asking questions to learn not to seem uneducated or dumb.

Thanks in advance!

Re:Hedgehog eating shavings? - 2005/03/01 23:40 oh and I found out she was eating them by her poop. She was in her ball and when she pooped I of course cleaned it up and there were shavings in it.

Re:Hedgehog eating shavings? - 2005/03/02 11:30 What species of wood shavings are you using? Sometimes hedgehogs will chew on bedding for the purpose of phleming the scent on thier quills, I'm wondering if she is inadvertantly swallowing them.

No one thinks you are dumb or uneducated, We're all here to learn more about hedgehogs. The reply in the post in the breeding forum, from what I can tell, wasn't meant to be snappish, just concerned.

Re:Hedgehog eating shavings? - 2005/03/03 03:51 I use kiln dried pine. I've tried aspin and she throws it out of the cage.

If she is doing this then why chew on the cage liners? She doens't spit after she eats them she just looks like she's carrying them around and spitting them out. The liners are made of cotton blended fiber and are cleaned and washed before she gets them. She does the same thing to my cloths too.? Its werid.

Re:Hedgehog eating shavings? - 2005/03/03 10:27 Do you use a scented laundry detergent or dryer sheet? The fact that she also chews your clothes makes me ask this, since they are so very scent oriented.

Re:Hedgehog eating shavings? - 2005/03/04 12:09 Well, she may just be mouthy...or insane. Personally I'd vote for insane, but that's just me. Perhaps one of of our other members will have an idea...

Re:Hedgehog eating shavings? - 2005/03/14 19:41 The shaving eating could be a sign that she needs more fiber in her diet, but the fabric shouldn't help with that. She may have some form of intestinal discomfort, I would ask your vet for any ideas.
Her chewing on the fabric shouldn't be harmful to her, as long as she isn't actually getting any threads or peices loose.

Re:Hedgehog eating shavings? - 2005/04/23 15:02 I have babies that chew the heck out my clothes and the blankets they get to sit on when I have them out in my lap for socialization. They don't always annoint.

The ingestion of shavings is far more serious and troublesome. It could be a condition known as Pica which can be from some sort of nutritional deficiency. I would agree that a vet visit would be the best way to handle the situation, if for nothing else than peace of mind that your precious hog is ok and not blocked internally or anything.

Please keep us updated.

Re:Hedgehog eating shavings? - 2005/07/24 06:47 Personally I use recycled newspaper pellet bedding. It seems to work well, is low dust, and low scent as well. If it is a scent issue I would try this. My sonic has no interest in eating the pellets.

Re:Hedgehog eating shavings? - 2005/10/27 23:21 I just started Hans with Yesterday's News...and he annointed the first night. I picked him up in the morning and he had clumps of chewed newspaper stuff on his head and his rump. :hakes head::

Maybe Hans is trying to make himself a Halloween costume? The kids in my town do their Trick-or-Treating tomorrow, so Hans must be starting to work on his costume now. Give him a break, the poor little man only has poop and bedding to work with!
