Cardboard Bedding? - 2007/09/12 16:56 I'm new to hedgehog keeping and was just wondering if anyone else uses cardboard bedding/litter.
I don't know whether it has the same name in the U.S or Canada (or if it's even available), but in the uk it's called BedXcel. It's simply recycled cardboard boxes that have been cut into 2cm squares, and was originally used as horse bedding, so it comes in large bales for just over £5 (~$10).
I originally heard about it through other rat owners who found that wood shavings caused breathing problems in their rats. I've now been using it for years for my rats, chins, rabbits and guineas and haven't looked back. So when i got Hector the hedgie I thought i'd try him on it and he absolutely loves it! The only problem is that he burrows his way down in it (like wild European hedgehogs do with leaves) and I have to very delicately sort through all of the litter in his cage to try and find him without getting spined (not easy when you have a new hedgehog who doesn't want to be found)!

Re:Cardboard Bedding? - 2007/09/13 11:46 I'd love to see a picture of Hector borrowed in his litter. It sounds like he really likes it.

Re:Cardboard Bedding? - 2007/09/13 16:31 Yay, it worked!

As you can probably tell he was less than impressed at getting so rudely woken up (lol)!

Re:Cardboard Bedding? - 2007/10/09 19:25 That looks like so much fun and the price sounds great as well... unless you need to ship it to the US and then I imagine it's not so cost effective . What a lucky little hedgie you have! Check out Ham's Blog !
