Newspaper Bedding - 2007/11/13 15:23 I read online somewhere to just simply use torn/cut up newspaper as bedding. I was just wondering if anyone else uses this? I haven't noticed any problems, but I don't want to either. If anyone has any advice, that'd be great!

Re:Newspaper Bedding - 2007/11/13 15:32 I think I've read somewhere that you should make sure the paper was printed with soy based inks. Anything else could be toxic possibly? Also another thing that I remember reading was that the ink (even soy based ink) will eventually start to rub off and turn your little guys belly gray/black. More of an aesthetic issue but still worth mentioning. Check out Ham's Blog !

That makes so much sense, too. I can't believe I didn't clue in before!

Re:Newspaper Bedding - 2007/11/13 15:53 I haven't really heard of anyone using newspaper for their hedgies. From my experience with guinea pigs & newspaper, I think I know why (this was my first pigg that someone had to give away and I didn't know better at the time; my next three piggs had improved housing).

There's the ink issue that jick mentioned - in addition to possible toxicity issues, it can turn your hedgie colors and the bottom of the cage colors - especially if it's plastic. And that doesn't come off easily. Also, it's not terribly absorbant when they pee. So you get pee sitting on paper and your hedgie has to run through it. S/he won't be able to burrow under it once wet. When wet, it kinda glues the pieces of paper together all flattened and wet and stinky and cold. It's not so much fun for the animal and definitely not fun for the human to clean up. I'd recommend liners or carefresh or shavings over torn newspaper pieces.

Re:Newspaper Bedding - 2007/11/13 21:12 Yup pretty much what everyone else brought up...turns to paper mache compound when it gets peed on, they will get it ALL over themselves and will probably annoint with it and the question of it being toxic. Julie Pierce

Re:Newspaper Bedding - 2007/11/16 18:41 we use yesterday's news which is recycled paper that is pressed into pellets....but I don't think I would just use newpaper....maybe plain paper....too cold if your hedgies not potty trained....
