Baking Soda - 2005/11/10 00:50 My mom proposed that I put a thin layer of baking soda in the hedgie cages before I put the bedding in. I read the back of the box and found this was suggested for kitty litter boxes. Finding nothing that looked risky I tried it and it seems to make what little smell there ever was go away. Since it's under the bedding I haven't had any problems with my hedgehogs eatting it or anything. Opinions or ideas on this?

Re:Baking Soda - 2005/11/10 01:06 I've heard of people using baking soda under the shavings, and I haven't heard of any problems. Hedgehogs are immune to many toxins, so i don't think it should cause any issues. Just keep your eyes open for changes in behavior or poop color. Kelly Sosik-Hamor

I use puppy pads under my hedgies wheels.
The pads have baking soda in them and helps with the smell.
I now use those pads for EVERYTHING
I put them under the grid in my Sugar Gliders palace, the Ring Neck Doves and the Quaker Parrot cage. Also under the Parrots playpen up on top.

Re:Baking Soda - 2005/11/16 15:03 I've used it for my cat's litter boxes and it works pretty well. I know you can also open part of the box (some have where you can pull off the cardboard on one side, for fridges) and place it near the cages and it will help to absorb the odor. Great idea putting it under the bedding though, can't believe I never thought of it
