Substrate Question - 2008/02/25 08:13 For starters this is my first post and I do not currenlty own a hedgehog.
I have done alot or reading and research but have a question still about substrate. Can the green reptile carpet found in most pet stores be used for a hedgehog, or will this bother or hurt their feet? Are mites a common issue with them or is this based on a number of factors such as source obtained, & bedding used. Thanks for any help.

PS: I live in Kingston, Ontario Canada. My name is Paul.

Re:Substrate Question - 2008/02/25 14:44 i don't think the green liners would hurt a hedgehog. but if you're going to use a liner, i'd suggest a fleece one. you can change them out and their machine washable. they are soft and comfy for your hedgie. hedgies also like to dig, so make sure to provide blankets, or a hedgie bag. mites are more of a problem with shavings. and yes it is based on a few factors. you can use shavings for an animals entire life and never have a problem with mites. animals with a lower immune system are more prone to mite infestation. read the article about mites on this web site for more info Lisa

Re:Substrate Question - 2008/02/25 14:53 I'd worry about a hedgehog trying to eat the green liner. Just the different texture may encourage chewing, etc. If you want to go for a liner, I'd recommend the fleece, or something like that. Stasi

Re:Substrate Question - 2008/02/27 18:11 when I had a lizard the green fake grass liners were made out of loops of a plastic type material that would always become frayed. I would worry that the hedgie could get a loop caught around a toe and have problems. Ava's mom!
