Wood Shavings - 2008/02/28 04:18 Hi anyone in the UK use Pets at Home wood shavings. I just bought Lychee a cage twice the size and all they had was wood shavings. They smell a lot more "woody" than what he had in his last cage but aren't oily. The pack said it was suitable for Guinea Pigs which I know have the same problems with pine and cedar?

It's ok I phoned round and got to the mfr and they said it's all kiln dried pine, phew a

Re:Wood Shavings - 2008/02/28 13:22 Right here's another question. I am worrying about the pine being pine even though it's kiln dried but he is spending his time with his nose buried in it then licks it off, is this normal. I know it's all new to him but i couldn't stand hurting the lil guy.

Re:Wood Shavings - 2008/02/28 14:22 pine shavings are okay to use. i know some people on this forum (they're breeders too) who use pine with no problems. hedgehogs like to dig so he's probably having a lot of fun digging through it. if he's licking himself he might be self anointing. hedgies will start to foam at the mouth and lick themselves. they usually will do that with new smells. it's perfectly normal. Re:Wood Shavings - 2008/02/28 14:27 ...and I've also read of other hedgies getting all irritated and sneezy with the shavings.

It probably depends on the individual hedgie. Just keep a good watch over your little one and if things don't look right to you, change over to something else like a fleece or vellux liner.

Re:Wood Shavings - 2008/02/28 14:33 Ahh it's ok, He's decided what he wants as his bedding, I put his litter tray in there full of shredded paper and he took it all to his little corner house. Do hedgehogs generally like peeping, he used to have a half log to sleep under but now he has a plastic corner house type thing he can't really see out of so he pushes his nose out under so he can see. I might give him his wood back although with his decisive attitude I might let him make his mind up
