introducing a litter box? - 2007/02/17 16:58 So my hedgie is about 4 months old right now. When I first got him he pooped and peed over everything. Now, he seems to have developed some control and only uses an area under his wheel.
I am thinking of introducing a litter box to help decrease the mess under the wheel.
any suggestions on how to go about this?

Re:introducing a litter box? - 2007/02/18 01:47 you can put a little quantity of poo inside the litter box, to keep his odor and to do more easy your hedgie to use it. Helva & Vicky & Nono & Thais & the Others (3dogs 4cats)

Re:introducing a litter box? - 2007/02/18 08:25 Thats exactly what I've been pondering how to do right now too! What would you guys use as a litterbox? I was thinking of using a show box lid, covered in packing tape. Any suggestions?

Re:introducing a litter box? - 2007/02/18 08:47 If you could find tupperware/rubbermaid type containers in the right size that would work. Ann

Re:introducing a litter box? - 2007/02/18 12:16 yes, I was more curious as to how to get him to use it. However, one technical problem has arose; the wheel we have is slightly unbalanced, so we have a weight holding the base down (it fell over on top of hef when we first got the wheel).
So, yes, I can put a litter box under the wheel.. however, my question: is there a better type pan to use? what litter?
and how can I keep the wheel from falling over??

Re:introducing a litter box? - 2007/02/19 07:00 They are more likely to use it if you put it where they are already pooping. You could put a paper towel or litter in that area with or without a container and if they poop elsewhere put the poop in that spot so they know that is the area where they should go. It's a bit trial and error depending on the hedgehog.

What kind of wheel do you have? Can you attach it to your cage somehow?

Re:introducing a litter box? - 2007/02/19 18:50 Herbie is really good at using the litter box. I picked up his poops that were elsewhere and stuck them in it. I use a little plastic tray-like container I bought at Walmart for $3. It is only about an inch and 1/2 deep and works well. I put paper towels in the bottom.
Snow pees in his litter box but prefers the wheel for pooping, no matter what I do. Some are better at using it than others I think.
