Corn Cob Bedding - 2006/09/30 19:36 All of a sudden I have alot of people (on their questionnaires) listing corn cob bedding as what they're going to use for a hh. What is everyone's thoughts on this? I was under the impression that this is a definite NO for bedding, but looking at some posts here, I see that some people indeed use corn cob. I don't want to tell people the "wrong" thing.

Re:Corn Cob Bedding - 2006/10/01 17:30 I am really not fond of Corn Cob bedding. I have heard (first hand) horror stories about peices getting stuck in the... um... sensitive bits of male hedgehogs, with severe consequences in some cases.
As well, corn cob molds fairly easily, so under leaky water bottles can become a moldy mess in a short period of time. Especially if a water bottle is hung near where the food dish sets, within a day or two you can have a moldy mess under the food dish where it doesn't have the ability to dry easily.

Re:Corn Cob Bedding - 2006/10/07 20:17 I used corn cobb bedding for the first few months with my boys because that is what they were on at the breeder. I had two problems with it. First, Snow had a leaky water bottle that would drip a few times when you first filled it and there was indeed mold in the bedding every couple of days. Second, Snow got a piece stuck in his little private parts. I was able to get it out without any problem but I got concerned because of the infection and other possibilities with this happening. I now have them on a mix of pine shavings and carefresh. They love it. They burrow under their wheels and sleep in it now. Cyn and Hedgie Boys

Re:Corn Cob Bedding - 2006/10/08 08:05 Corn cob is a huge NO NO! The reason you see it popping up on everyone's questionnaire is because 'Hedgehogs by Vicki' includes it in her cage combo. Tell your people NOT to get her cage (this is nothing against Vicki, I don't know her). The metal will rust from feces and urine, and it happens rather quickly. Also, metal holds in heat and cold, which is very bad for our little pals.

Re:Corn Cob Bedding - 2006/10/08 22:43 Thanks Girls! I've already told the people they shouldn't use corn cob bedding. I didn't think of discouraging them from using Vicki's cages--I thought they weren't a good idea, but.....

Re:Corn Cob Bedding - 2006/10/09 04:11 Yep, she is where I got the corn cob bedding to begin with. I thought it was worth a try. She breeds a lot of hedgies and has never had a problem with it so I thought we would just try it. Until I saw that piece in Snow's privates. Then I switched immediately. I am thinking of trying liners now though because care fresh gets all over the house. Cyn and Hedgie Boys

Re:Corn Cob Bedding - 2007/03/30 11:09 Im reading of all the problems with corn cob bedding getting stuck (poor guys) in the penis sheath but has anybody had any HEALTH problems arise from using it for the ladies? I only have one, a new little girl and I bought 5 bags of Corn Cob bedding for her. If the problems are only evident in males wouldnt it be okay to use for my girl Zuri? My girl is used to drinking from a bowl so I have a water bowl UNDER my water bottle for her to drink from while I try to teach her to use the bottle so Im not worried about the cob bedding getting wet because there is a bowl to catch any stray drips. Re:Corn Cob Bedding - 2007/03/30 11:37 The corn cob will get wet from the hedgehogs urine and feces also. Mold can happen very quickly at warm temps. As the hedgies need the warmth, corn cob bedding is just not the best idea. Water bowls have a tendency to spill, which again will make the bedding wet. Not to mention, it's not comfortable..can you imagine sleeping in it? If you can take the corn cob back, in my opinion that's what you should do. Stasi

Re:Corn Cob Bedding - 2007/03/30 11:46 ~So what is the BEST choice for bedding/litter? Aspen? Im in a not so big town so I cant find alot of the brands etc Ive seen mentioned but I do have a Petsmart and Walmart and a Rural King etc so please give me a good suggestion so I can change this out asap. I dont want her getting used to it and then change it so I probably should get something different today/tomorrow~

Re:Corn Cob Bedding - 2007/03/30 12:53 Aspen is great, kiln dried pine works well also, as does Carefresh. Some people use liners also, and have good luck with those. Stasi
