Pine shavings - 2006/10/27 21:45 After my hedgehog was diagnosed as being allergic to hemp bedding the vet advised me to put her back on pine. I went to Petco and found about three different brands that say they are safe for guinea pigs and other small animals, but they don't say anywhere that they were kiln dried. When I asked the sales associate she looked at me like I had three heads and said she had never heard of such a thing. Is there any particular place that sells it or a particular brand that is good; or is most of the product sold kild dried so they don't add it to the label? I am scard to put her on anything else in case she is allergic to that also.

Did you ever consider that she may have looked at you like hat because you DO have 3 heads? Hey, anything is possible!

Not all bags will say "kiln Dried" but most brands are. Pick up the bag and take a wiff. It should have a light pine scent and you shouldn't be able to see any sap.

Re:Pine shavings - 2006/10/28 18:48 Well I checked, and there is definately only one head there. Anyway, thanks for the advice, it doesn't smell too strong so I think it will be fine.

Re:Pine shavings - 2006/10/30 18:01 I had the same problem when I used pine. So I called the company and asked! The assured me it was and even told me more details than I really wanted to know about their wood and shavings! You should be able to find some sort of info on the bags themselves. Nicole

Re:Pine shavings - 2006/10/30 19:47 I use Super Shavins from petsmart. I put a layer of this down and then carefresh on top of it. The boys love it, they burrow and sleep in it. It has a very light scent and absorbs great. I have noticed the bottoms of their cages are much cleaner when litter changing day comes. Cyn and Hedgie Boys

Re:Pine shavings - 2007/04/17 16:09 My little guy used to sleep in an only Aspen Shaving 20gal tank.

I ran out of Aspen shavings... so I found at home, a bag of wood shavings that the old hamster used to use...

Safe for small animals and so on...
Dosent smell strong... I tried it...

THen I realized it was Pine...

So I changed his home a bit, use half towel, half shoe box with shavings...
Took the pine out and only use Aspen Shavings.

My question is...

Some sources say that pine is to be avoided, witch is the reason for taking out the pine from my 20gal tank (also a fish tank clearly has less ventilation)

Is pine alright ?
Is some pine good and some pine not good ?

Re:Pine shavings - 2007/04/17 16:38 Some pine is fine, other not fine.
Basically, you want kiln dried and as little dust as possible. If it has a strong odor of pine, and/or feels 'oily', do not use it.

Re:Pine shavings - 2007/05/01 06:22 You probably are using careresh???? Pine is a lot cheaper and a bit less absorbent that carefresh. Really up to you which you prefer. Ann
