VERY smelly wheel - 2007/05/24 23:30 Hey everyone!
I have a question. My hedgie digit is very active and healthy. She loves to run and play! I have had digit for about 5 weeks now. She was born on 2/28/07. I have been feeding digit a mix that Kelly from Hamor Hollow gave me. It works well! For snacks and treats I give Digit small pieces of cooked eggs, small pieces of cooked chicken and crickets. Sometimes she will get a piece of lettece or carrot. She is pretty good so far at using her litter box to eliminate in. The litter box will not smell at all really, cleaning it once every few days-once a week seems to work well for now. Also the carefresh litter that I use does a good job at absorbing oder and stuff. The only problem is that when she poops and pees on her wheel it smells horrible! I also have noticed that as everything build up she starts slipping. I have to clean her wheel every few hours to keep the smell away! I have a silent spinner wheel, which I like, except for the smell issue. Is there anything I can do about this? Please Help!

Re:VERY smelly wheel - 2007/05/25 01:17 Some treats make hedgehog poo smell worse, mealie worms are a good example. Try only using one treat for a few days, then swich to something different. See which ones smell worse.

Report back and let us know.

Re:VERY smelly wheel - 2007/05/26 10:31 Okay... So I have tried only givng Digit crickets for last night.... and her poop does not smell half as bad as it did before! So I thinkt that the culprit was definitly the eggs because they were another main treat that I would give her. I guess this leads to another question. Is it okay to give her only one type of treat or should I vary her treats? She really likes crickets so it wouldn't be a problem of her not eating them, I am just wondering if it is nutritionally healthy to only give her one form of treat. Any comments would be great! http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:VERY smelly wheel - 2007/06/04 14:23 I am really not surprised about the eggs... They make my fiance pretty stinky, so I can imagine the hedgie picking up that smell too

As far as the smelly wheel goes, I have noticed it not just being the poo that causes the stench. With my hedgie, even when she mostly poops in her litter tray, I notice that the wheel reeks due to the urine *shrugs*
