Weight Scales - 2007/07/06 11:20 Is it a good idea to have one of these on hand for even the most basic of hedgie owners? If you weigh your hedgie, how often is a good idea? What are the best types to buy, digital or scale?

Re:Weight Scales - 2007/07/06 11:41 I do recommend scales for hedgie owners. It can be a very useful tool.
To basic hedgehog owners, I recommend weighing once a week, unless you have concerns, or are monitoring a problem (loss of appetite, lethargy, on meds, etc) with your vet - then certainly increase the frequency.

I personally appreciate the digital scales - they're very accurate, and are not expensive.

Re:Weight Scales - 2007/07/06 16:22 if you have any doubts about the accuracy of your scale, just take your hedgie to the vet for a comparison weight, my vet does it for free. When I first got my scale I really thought something was wrong, a comparison weight told me Pippi really had lost a lot and that prompted us to take tests. I do find that weighing once a week is good if their condition warrants constant monitoring... P-k I don't obsess about so much so she gets weighed every ten days.

Re:Weight Scales - 2007/07/06 16:30 additional suggestion on weigh ins - there is a certain cozy bag I usethat I have weighed separately on the scale. Then you lightly drop the hedgehog into the cozy bag while they are sleeping or drowsy, put them in the bowl on the scale, note the digital number and deduct the weight of the bag. Putting a hedgehog in a bowl does not work well, everytime they move it changes the weight on the scale. And flat top scales they will just walk off of. Quick, efficient and not disruptive.

Re:Weight Scales - 2007/07/06 20:03 Most scales have a 'tare' function on them. Put whatever container you are going to have the hedgehog in to weigh them without the hedgehog on the scale - press the tare button, and that zeros it out - taking any math out of the weighing process. Stasi

Re:Weight Scales - 2007/07/07 06:23 A digital food or postage scale is a nice thing to have. Mine works like Stasi's does too where you put the container on, zero it out and you are good to go. Ann

Re:Weight Scales - 2007/07/12 13:39 I bought a digital weight scale! Cotton weighed in at 264g, YAY! So for her being a little over four months old, is that pretty normal? Or I am wondering if she is a small girl for her age . *~*Steph*~*
