Where can I find a wheel? - 2006/12/11 00:29Hello, Where can I find a wheel sufficient in size for my hedgie? I looked at both petsmart and petco, and the largest wheels they had were for rats. I am thinking I should take a look at some local pet shops, but are their any good sites I can order from? thanx.

Re:Where can I find a wheel? - 2006/12/11 01:01Petco, petsmart & Dr Fosters & Smith all sell either the comfort wheel or silent spinner online. Quality cage.com also sells wheels.
They probably could get order one for you at your local pet store. That's where I get most of mineAnn Connecticut Hedgehogs

Re:Where can I find a wheel? - 2007/02/10 21:07I have purchased several from different places. I am hoping your housing can handle a 11 or 12 inch wheel. I have a 12 inch deep tank that limits me with height. I've bought one from Dr. Foster and Smith, great wheel but only two sizes: 6 inch too small for hedgie and 12 inch too big for tank. The plastic ones in pet stores are also great but 12 inch. I purchased a 9 inch at www.hedgehogsbyvickie.com great quality but a little small for everyday use but i can put it in the tank and fit the lid on if I go away overnight. Vickie also has an 11 inch one that is a little too tall for my tank due to the stand but is probably the same fine quality as the 9 inch wheel I have. I have bought two 10-1/2 inchers from someone in Arkansas on ebay, they are from recycled buckets and the second one had plaster on it so I won't buy another from them. When I have to replace another, I will try one from hogwheelsbychet@hotmail.com I've looked at them on the net and they look good and are 10-1/2 inch so I might be able to fit it into my tank. Hope this has been helpful, I've read 11 or 12 inch is best. And GET PLASTIC not wire mesh.

Re:Where can I find a wheel? - 2007/02/10 23:00I can't speak for the silent spinner but I wouldn't go with the comfort wheel. The next wheel I will order...I've seen some metal ones?!?! We got Pepper a comfort wheel and about a week later the plastic device that attaches on the back broke. So we got another one and after only 2 weeks it is really warped and crooked! He's not very big, but the wheel is very lopsided and bucks him out from time to time. Find a reliable homemade variety or maybe metal but comfort wheels kind of suck!

Re:Where can I find a wheel? - 2007/02/11 06:57you're right, some of the frames are not sturdy. The names Whisper Wheel, Silent Spinner and Comfort Wheel mean nothing to me. I go by the frame, wire (Dr. Foster and Smith and standard pet store ones) look great but don't hold up. The ones fabricated with PVC pipe or vinyl back and platform have held up very well for me (and vickie's with a solid back has allowed me to drill and attach a water bottle holder to the back... normally Pippi drinks out of a bowl but I like to leave a bottle in case my return home gets delayed and the tank has no place to hang one).

We have a bunch of comfort wheels here and the only the oldest one is slightly warped but still usable. Is your wheel attached to the stand all the way? I have had them come lose fron the stand. Either sandpaper the metal or tie-wrap it to keep it on the stand.Ann Connecticut Hedgehogs

Plastic bins are a much better option than glass tanks. They are more light weight and easier to clean, plus you can solder holes for water bottles and wheelsAnn Connecticut Hedgehogs

Re:Where can I find a wheel? - 2007/02/15 12:57Leona Frances currently has a 9.5" Comfort Wheel in her cage that she dearly loves but it is a bit too small. The larger Comfort Wheel doesn't fit in her cage, plus it's really wobbly. I want a bucket wheel like the one at HedgehogsbyVickie.com but her larger one is too big (and smaller one is too small). Ideally I want one that stands 12" high (stand included). All the links I've found for bucket-style hedgehog wheels aren't producing them now (A Spiny Place) or don't respond to emails. Where can I see the "Hogwheels by chet" ones mentioned earlier? (I am NOT handy and could not make my own!)

Re:Where can I find a wheel? - 2007/02/16 13:13Hedgies.com has directions on how to make your own wheel. It is under an alternative to the wire wheel. I copied those directions years ago when I got my first hedgie. You can also find other directions if you just plug in hedgehog wheels. Making them is soooooooooo much cheaper than buying and shipping one. My dad has made my hedgie wheels with very little modification and they work great. The directions that say to use a roller blade wheel work great but after time the ball bearings kind of wear out so you have to take the wheel apart and get another roller blade wheel. Try to keep the center of the wheel sort of dry as you clean it out each morning and it will last longer. I can make a wheel for about $8. I have also found looking for roller blades is cheap if you go to garage sales or the Goodwill. You get like 8-10 wheels in a pair of skates for like $2. Because I make multiple wheels, making my own is MUCH cheaper. Don't be afraid to try making them it isn't hard

It is not the cheapest one I came across, but the one I was about to buy in Petco cracked when the person put it into the bag once he had rung it up.Kristyn (Tessie and Tabatha (a.k.a. Tabby)) Medford, MA

Re:Where can I find a wheel? - 2007/08/07 00:58This is the wheel Ms. Pickles has. She loves it and it's big enough for her in the 12" size.

The Quality Cage wheels will last. They are definately top of the line and worth the extra cost.

Right now I have a silent spinner wheel and I like this wheel. The only problem with it is that it isn't very durable at all! I have dropped it a few times and every time I do I put another crack in it! I want to get Digit a new wheel which will last, and be very quiet. Since Digit's cage is in my bedroom I need something that is quiet so that I can sleep and not really be woken up during the night. Does anyone have any suggestions for wheels that are really quiet and will last???http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777
Yep, I have a couple of Silent Spinners. They're a perfectly fine wheel.
I heard the hedgies can get their claws/toes caught in the crevices.....has any one had this happen?Emily Prickles N' Quills Hedgehogs Breeding for Excellent Health, Personality & Color Charlotte, NC www.pricklesnquills.webs.com www.remembermethemovie.webs.com

Re:Where can I find a wheel? - 2007/08/11 09:00I personally love Vickie's Whisper wheels - I have purchased three - the 9 incher for Pippi when she was sick and lost weight, and two eleven inchers and one is the hefty hedgie wheel which is two buckets sandwiched for extra durability. See P-k on that wheel, she does some serious tromping for five hours straight every night. Max has the regular 11 inch whisper wheel for his shorter but frequent runs (and its in one of their new hot colors ).
As you can see, there is an extremely durable white plastic base and back to this wheel. I have actually drilled and hung a small water bottle on the back when we go away overnight so there is both bottle and bowl available. We accidentally stepped on the base when we had put it on the floor to clean the cage and cracked it - I was able to purchase another base for ten bucks. We were very happy that this was possible.
Vickie's wheels are extremely quiet - I've had others trying to economize and found I just wasted money on cheaper ones when I should have bought these in the first place.
I've had a few dealings with vickie on the phone, they were brief - I suspect she might just be one of these people who doesnt' like to talk on the phone. I've ordered a lot of stuff from her, and they quickly replaced one item that I was unhappy with. I've mostly dealt with Gary via email, and I usually purchase things through their ebay auctions for it's so much easier paying with paypal.
