Poopin in their wheels - 2007/09/24 11:16 I'm thinking this is a obvious yes question but I figured I would ask anyway. Do hedgehogs poop in their wheel everyday? Mine does and I end up cleaning it everyday. Is there anything I can do for stopping that? Brittany Rose- Franchesca's momma

Re:Poopin in their wheels - 2007/09/24 12:54 Hector only ever poops and pees in his wheel too, so I have to take his wheel out and soak it every day.
I think the exercise stimulates them to go and most are quite happy to run in it.
I'm hoping that as Hector's only 12wks old, he may grow out of it, but somehow I doubt it! lol Barbara with Hector & Harriet Hog

Re:Poopin in their wheels - 2007/09/24 14:42 Someone oon another forum mentioned using that Glad Cling wrap (not saran wrap)on the wheel. Then you just peel off, pitch, and cut a new piece. I've never tried it.

Re:Poopin in their wheels - 2007/09/24 15:05 some people litter box train, others paper towel in the corner train. I never had any luck training until Max came and he was just a neat pooper. I fold a piece of paper towel in half and lay it at the base of the wheel and in the morning there are several hunks of poop there and very little on the wheel.

After having a sickly and difficult hedgie, I appreciate three things from my two new kiddies: the faint clicking of nails on the wheel tells me they are active and that is good - crunching of food tells me they have an appetite and the end product is poop - and after dealing with sickly hedgie poop you will come to realize that a healthy shaped and colored poop is a good thing.

If poop on the wheel makes you uncomfortable, wait until you give them a bath!

I've never tried it. They may be talking about Glad press and seal?? Its made out of different stuff and is more sticky on one side. I have some here to try. Ann

Hee hee.... I can definitly see digit ending up in this scenero by morning! On the pooping on the wheel it seems like most hedgies will do it. Since I litter box trained my hedgie there is definitly less poop on her wheel, sometimes none at all, but she still does poop on it someitmes. If you think of it from the hedgies point of view they are running away... so why not just poop if you are running away from it anyway!

I have been thinking about trying to figure out if I could make a newspaper thing that I could just slip on, then throw out in the morning. Like a hedgehog wheel liner sort thing. -Gina
