Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/10/31 09:04 I just received my first Quality Cage 11" wheel yesterday, and after looking at every imaginable wheel out there, I really think this one might be the best for hedgies.

It looks really great and there are no cheap plastic parts to break. The sides are open, so waste can "escape" from two sides. The surface is nice and smooth so it should be easy to clean. It attaches from the side so a litter pan slides underneath super easy, so changing it will be a snap. And my favorite part? It's NOT neon pink/green/purple!

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/10/31 13:44 I agree. The quality cage wheels have stood up to the test of time, especially in the group cages where they really get some mileage put on them. They are more expensive, but worth every penny in the long run.

If they ever start to squeak, a little unflavored cooking spray will do the trick. Just don't use butter flavored or the hedgie will go nuts licking it off.

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/11/07 23:12 can these be found at pet stores or only online?

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/11/07 23:22 Just online. Pet stores do have other plastic solid surface wheels, but they definitely aren't as good.

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/11/09 15:54 are people using the regular exercise wheel or the chin wheel mounted one? i like the mounted one but i'm a little concerned about it mounting on a regular cage, not the metal ones that they sell.

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/11/09 19:42 I did write and ask if they could be used with hedgehogs and I was told they could. Apparently it doesn't take much weight/force to get them moving. I haven't heard any personal experience though so I'm not sure if anyone has actually tried. I imagine the cage would rattle a bit while it was in use. If I had more money and a larger cage/apartment then I would probably give it a try. Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/11/10 22:45 My problem isn't so much the squeek of the wheel, but the fact that the weight of Quentin on the wheel causes the bottom to bounce against the side of his cage while he runs (while it is wall mounted in his cage) which causes quite a racket. I was wondering if the Quality Cage wheels are more sturdy when wall mounted and his weight won't cause the bottom to bump against the cage sides (I have a Marchioro). I'm really not a big fan of using the stand inside the cage. Jessica

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/11/10 22:46 Also, the chin-spin looks a lot better, but with the closed bottom cage that I have I don't think it could possibly work unless I do some irrepairable renovations to Quent's cage. Jessica

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/11/11 15:22 Since my baby is only 8 weeks it's hard to know for sure but I think the cage won't rattle too greatly even when he's larger. It hangs on the side of the cage but not from the side of the wheel but the bottom (kinda).

Not sure if the picture helps but... it can stand like they show in the picture or the stand swings up to the right and hangs on the edge. There really is no way for the wheel to bounce with someone running inside. If that doesn't make sense I can try posting pictures of it on the wall later.

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/11/11 16:40 Ah, I see how it wall mounts now. I'm so used to it mounting on the side of the wheel. The only thing I've ever worried about with those types of wheels is if the wheel is still spinning and he tries to jump out and catches himself between the two bars. Ouch! Also, does the metal have some sort of friction surface so he won't slide around? Jessica

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/11/11 17:23 Those are are my two worries as well. Right now he sorta runs and stops because I'm not so sure he knows what he's doing yet, which results in him sliding a bit. I think that will stop when he realizes he can just keep running though. I think a more experienced hedgehog wouldn't have an issue with that at all. As far as the bars on the side goes... I think this might be more of a concern for people with "sloppy" runners. I can't quite tell how he's going turn out in that regards yet. He did run into one once which resulted in him balling up and huffing on his wheel which was pretty funny actually. I'm hoping he figures this one out on his own. Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/11/11 20:13 I would think that these might be a problem maybe.? I know that my hedgie runs and then stops and looks off the side of her wheel and then goes to run again. I dont know though I have never had one of these wheels, I just have a silent spinner! http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/11/11 21:03 I've spoken with two people who've had these (one of which being Kelly) and they haven't mentioned that being a problem. I'm hoping it won't be but like I said it's still to early to say. As it is he's basically been sleeping since I brought him home! Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/11/12 07:21 Thanks for the helpful info. Does the wheel make much noise then? With Quentin being under my bed and all I'd be willing to pay $100 for one of these wheels if my sleeping and Quentin's wheeling can coexist. Jessica

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/11/12 09:36 Right now my wheel makes no noise at all (except tiny feet running). I think that might go away though? I've heard that a little spritz of unflavored cooking spray on the axles helps keep it that way. Check out Ham's Blog !

Yeah, pretty much that's what keeps a wheel from squeaking. However, the sound of the bang against the side of the cage wouldn't be helped much by oil.

The tiny running feet noise doesn't go away. And I'm glad for that.
It's soothing to hear the pitter patter of little feet running

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/11/12 14:00 There is no banging wheel sounds at all and I hardly doubt there ever will be due to the way that it is made to hang. That's one of my favorite parts about this wheel! Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:Quality Cage wheels rule! - 2007/11/12 20:35 I've never really had the chance to hear pitter-patter over the ~clunk~ ~clunk~ ~clunk~ of the wheel against the cage base. Jessica

Hehe that's what I get to hear with my homemade bucket wheels It's the cutest sound in the world! But I do hear the sound of the wheel itself moving, not squeaks or banging, but because the hedgie has grown up. When Cotton and Noodles were smaller, it was only the sound of feet, but now I hear it all!
