Wheel - 2007/11/13 15:48
This is the wheel I have been using ever since I got my hedgie, Quilliam. I've noticed little bloody paw prints in his cage twice. There are no sharp objects in his cage which could have caused this. I know it's common for them to cut their tiny paws on wheels. I was just wondering if this is a particularly unsafe wheel. I have no idea and would like to know if a new wheel could stop my hedgies feet from bleeding. Thanks!

Re:Wheel - 2007/11/13 16:07 That looks like a crazy wheel! I've never even seen one of those before... where did you get it? And if he cut himself on the wheel wouldn't there be some blood on the wheel as well? Might be hard to see on that bright red though! Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:Wheel - 2007/11/13 17:15 So the plastic goes up and around? Hedgie has to climb over it to get in the wheel?

My only thoughts are, offhand, that if that's the case, maybe the plastic is rough in a spot and the paws are getting scraped up that way.

Re:Wheel - 2007/11/13 21:15 If he is a very overzealous runner....(runs constantly for hours on end) then it is not uncommon for them to tear up the pads on the bottom of their feet on just about any wheel. Take the wheel out for a few days, let his feet heal, then line the inside of the wheel with some craft foam. The craft foam will pad it and it will be much softer on his feet for running his marathons. Julie Pierce

Re:Wheel - 2007/11/13 21:31 How does that craft foam clean up or is it more of a single time use fix? Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:Wheel - 2007/11/13 21:59 Craft foam is ok for a few uses. You do have to give it a scrubbing daily but should last a good few days. My other favorite solution, is Maxi Pads......

They are soft, absorbent and disposable...perfect for lining hedgehog wheels.

hahahahahah! But just think of the interesting explanation you could offer the person at the CVS checkout register as to why you are buying the industrial size container of pads!!! LOL

Re:Wheel - 2007/11/14 11:27 I'm not sure that would go over so well, either at the store or if anyone actually did that! It scares me just to think of the reaction... *shudder Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:Wheel - 2007/11/16 09:15 @ jick:
Haha I believe I got the wheel at Wal Mart. And I couldn't find any blood on the wheel itself. My guess was he was bleeding, which likely hurt, and got off? I have no idea.

Thanks for the suggestion of craft foam! Or...Maxi Pads!

Re:Wheel - 2007/11/16 09:17 Thanks to everyone for their replies, too!
And the conversation regarding the Maxi Pads is hilarious!
