hedgie playpen - 2007/03/16 16:48 remember reading and laughing at someone's posting of a recipe where you throw a couple dozen live crickets into a bathtub with hedgies. Also saw a mention of a sandbox/safari type cricket hunt. I tried that and used that fresh crab sand since I couldn't find play sand this time of year, Pippi ignored the crickets and ate the sand - made of calcium carbonate. Scrap that idea. Now I have another playtime idea, knowing how they like to burrow - I'm thinking about putting a bunch of odd socks we normally save for craft puppets (freshly laundered with no holes) into a plastic shoebox and let her dig down... are socks a bad idea, should I maybe replace with something else?

Re:hedgie playpen - 2007/03/16 18:38 fleece strips, paper strips, how much of a mess do you want? Either of those would probably be more fun than sox. Ann

Re:hedgie playpen - 2007/03/16 23:03 Cut off the ends of the socks so they don't get stuck. Oh, and make sure they stink. Stinky socks are great fun...... if your a hedgehog!

Re:hedgie playpen - 2007/03/17 07:25 And make sure to cut off any loose threads so they don't wrap around hedgie toes. The hedgie should have a blast! Cyn and Hedgie Boys

Re:hedgie playpen - 2007/03/18 10:40 I trimmed down some of the bigger pieces of fleece for her tank and threw those in the plastic shoe box (she will chew paper). I then threw in a couple of dried mealies and one of those little cat balls with a bell inside. Mixed it all up, and put her in and watched her burrow and dig for those mealies (hearing that bell ring as she roamed around). Pippi is not very playful, but she seems to enjoy this for it involves her favorite treat.
