healthy body - 2008/02/10 15:31 I know this has been discussed to death but I can't seem to remember where. I weighed Ham (see adorable picture below) and he weighs in at 333 grams which seems like a healthy weight for him at five months old. He is nice and proportionate although he has a slightly small frame. It doesn't seem like he has done too much growing recently, and I was wondering what age is considered grown/adult.

Re:healthy body - 2008/02/10 15:42 Awesome picture I love the reflection!

Growth varies quite a bit in the first year. Some are pretty much done by 6 months or so, but I have had a few who had major growth spurts around 9 months. Even the babies who seem to reach full size early can have a little bit more growth until they are 1.

Re:healthy body - 2008/02/10 17:25 Yeah, he could be full grown, but he definitely cold grow more too. I have 9 month old boy who has been around 330 grams for a few months now & I'm pretty sure he's full grown. But there are other hedgehogs that can be 600 grams and not be over weight, so it just really depends. Emily

Re:healthy body - 2008/02/10 17:58 I think he's really cute now and I'm glad that 330 isn't terribly uncommon. It would be nice if he grew a little more, for his ego, of course. Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:healthy body - 2008/02/10 19:42 WOW! Ava is only 250grams. She is not underfed by any means. Is this little for six almost seven months old? Ava's mom!

Re:healthy body - 2008/02/10 22:59 Does she look proportionate? I think that's the main thing to look for. When I first brought Ham home, and before I learned that he wasn't eating, he got really thin. His body thinned out behind his shoulder blades and above his hips instead of being more rounded. I remember thinking that was just how he looked but then I realized he needed his kibble crushed. Luckily he plumped up REAL quick. Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:healthy body - 2008/02/11 19:25 They come in all sorts of sizes. I have some adults in the 250g range, and others, who are not fat! in the 750 range. While not all have a 'teardrop' figure, as long as your hedgehogs' do not have an hourglass figure, he/she is doing ok. Stasi

Re:healthy body - 2008/03/27 10:54 I am thinking I should get a scale to monitor Spikey's weight. If you dont mind me asking, where did you get the scale in the picture and what is the brand name? Or does anybody have any recommendations for a scale to weigh hedgehogs.

Thanks in advance.

Re:healthy body - 2008/04/04 03:27 Oh god! Stasi has the absolute sexiest chubby hedgie named Soufle. That is a whole lot of loveable hedgie. "Fat bottomed gilrs they make the rockin world go round!" I say sexy cause i just don't know another word that quite describes that all encompassing need to touch something. She's amaizing! OK I'm done. I thought of soufle because she was a big girl that was very healthy. If I remember correctly obesity is defined as not being able to ball, and having yellow under the armpits. Correct me if I am wrong.

Re:healthy body - 2008/04/04 20:34 Our Ava is still a tiny girl. Just weighed her the other day and is still 250. We feed mealies and crickets, a tiny bit of yogurt and egg every once and awhile (we've tried other treats but she's not big on them)... but at 9months she's still a little squirt of a girl. Ava's mom!

Re:healthy body - 2008/04/05 06:13 Every hedgehog is different. I have a 6 mth old girl Bling who was the largest in her litter and she has remained substantially larger than any other baby I have ever had. I have Dumpling who was a peanut as a baby and is still tiny. Aarden and Bling are my largest....they are gigantic and need 2 hands to hold them. Everyone else is average size 250-350. Everyone has the same diet here too...its just individual differences. Julie Pierce

Re:healthy body - 2008/04/06 19:14 Yeah... I've noticed that Ham's weight goes up and down each day but in general he seems to be on the light side. Which is A OK by me.

Andrea- sorry for the delay!I bought it from Target a few months back. I liked how small it is so it's easy to keep in a drawer. Here is the link to the product online:

Re:healthy body - 2008/04/08 00:09 I need to get a scale to weigh Omelette. I'm quite curious to know what she weighs. Maybe I can find a cheap one on ebay? Anyone know anywhere else I can find a cheap one? Lisa

Re:healthy body - 2008/04/08 22:22 I saw some cheap ones at Target. I chose the one above though because it's digital and has a timer and clock and other features. But yes... they have more normal ones for less as well. Check out Ham's Blog !
