USDA Licensing and Vets - 2007/06/25 17:24 I have a question for all you USDA licensed breeders out there. My understanding of the vet/breeder relationship is that the vet
1) needs to come to your home once a year to check all the hogs
2) needs to have a backup person in the same office (that knows hedgehogs) if they are out or unavailable.
3) needs to have off hour care available (ie weekends, eves)

Is this correct? Is there anything I have missed? I am having a heck of a time finding a vet that meets these criteria....thanks

Re:USDA Licensing and Vets - 2007/06/26 00:11 I think any other person in the practice is (officially) fine, they don't really have to be a hedgehog vet. You don't need a specific name on the form.

For off hour care, just the contact info of an emergency clinic is fine. They don't have to do anything or sighn anything.

Re:USDA Licensing and Vets - 2007/06/26 07:53 Am I correct in that they do have to come to YOUR home once a year to check the hogs?

I am going to try Angell Memorial in Boston - obviously, they are #1 in exotics but I am anticipating a problem with the traveling to my house for the yearly visit since I am an hour away.

I have a good vet for my other pets that is much closer but as far as I know, he has never laid eyes on a hedgehog before so although he may be interested in working with me I am a little leary about the fact he has no experience...grrrr so frustrating

Re:USDA Licensing and Vets - 2007/06/26 08:05 Yes, they are supposed to go to your home for a yearly inspection.

I would ask your close vet and use Angel as a back up. It will probabally be more cost effective, and as long as the vet is willing to listen to your input on hedgehog care, he can probabally manage most things.
