Wheel slips - 2007/07/01 07:59I have a 12" plastic bucket wheel for my hedgie. However, I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and what they've done about it (I'm sure you have ). Cotton runs fast, and then will stop, causing the wheel to keep turning, and sometimes that means she slides off it. She is quite typical and likes to poop n pee as she runs.
So I am wondering what kind of non slip surface others use to put on their wheel that still allows them to scrub and spray/wash with hot water. I originally had a different kind of wheel, but because the contact paper surface was hard to clean, I chose to build a wheel.
Any advice would be appreciated! *~*Steph*~* Cotton, Noodles & Cocoa (hedgehogs), Kuruku & Kimiko (kittehs), Sushi & Lily (Ryukin Goldfish), Rosy & Ruby (beagle sisters), and Archie & Rocky (African Dwarf Frogs).

Re:Wheel slips - 2007/07/01 18:02What I'd try: 1. Make sure wheel is level when attached to cage so its less likely she'll fall 2. Rough it up a bit with sandpaper 3. Stickers like the ones you use in bathtubs to keep from falling. Make sure they aren't too rough or they may hurt her feet 4. Wait for her to figure it out

Re:Wheel slips - 2007/07/02 06:59The wheel is actually the one that is in the DIY article on this site, so it is already tilted a bit. I will try some of these, thank you!*~*Steph*~* Cotton, Noodles & Cocoa (hedgehogs), Kuruku & Kimiko (kittehs), Sushi & Lily (Ryukin Goldfish), Rosy & Ruby (beagle sisters), and Archie & Rocky (African Dwarf Frogs).

Re:Wheel slips - 2007/07/07 06:12 it is already tilted a bit. Tilted inward a little is usually ok. Even tilted outward works for some hedgies but others fall outAnn Connecticut Hedgehogs

Re:Wheel slips - 2007/07/07 10:08It is tilted in such a way that makes it more difficult for the hedgie to fall out (inward tilting?). It is just that with the bucket wheel, the surface is slippery so when she suddenly stops like she loves to do and she keeps moving at the velocity she was running because there's nothing for her to "hold" onto she keeps going.*~*Steph*~* Cotton, Noodles & Cocoa (hedgehogs), Kuruku & Kimiko (kittehs), Sushi & Lily (Ryukin Goldfish), Rosy & Ruby (beagle sisters), and Archie & Rocky (African Dwarf Frogs).

Re:Wheel slips - 2007/07/07 13:51Sounds to me like she's purposely stopping to enjoy the sliding motion too. We've had some do that, and I wondered the same thing for awhile, we even have 'scuffed' the bucket surface with sand paper to make it a less smooth surface, and had the hedgehogs no longer be able to slide. Some of them get very upset, so try to make 'undoable' traction -as she may get upset over the loss of slipping ability. Stasi Terrapin Hedgehogs Joppa, MD www.terrapinhedgehogs.com

Re:Wheel slips - 2007/07/07 22:06ROTFLMAO- That is just the funniest thing to me tonight... I can imagine these little prickle butts getting all pissed off, huffing and puffing because they can't slide anymore, in their poopy bucket wheels.
