Soft stools - 2007/07/02 16:34 So I have litter of beautiful babies (almost 8 wks old) that have developed soft stools. I took stool samples to the vet on Friday and they came back negative. I took the little girls into the vet this morning for a visit and we decided to go with another fecal screening (this one will include salmonella and some other things), along with altering their diet a bit (she thinks it is most likely dietary) and gave me some meds to help solidify their stools.

The food I use Special Kitty, Innova, CSFCLS light, Felidae - I am stripping out everything and just giving them special kitty for now to see if that helps.

If these things dont help then the next step would be to put them under, draw blood and do xrays....I really hope this is just a dietary thing. Any thoughts?

The one good thing is I found this wonderful vet and she is willing to work with me for my USDA licensing!!!

Re:Soft stools - 2007/07/03 03:38 Add Purina Kitten to your diet.

Um.... your hedgehog's diet, not YOUR diet.

Re:Soft stools - 2007/07/03 07:06 Anyway it could be the water causing issues? Just a thought to throw out there.

I also have Purina in my hoglet mix and I've had great sucess with that. Also are you feeding mom what you are weaning the hoglets on to? It helps transition them better when mom is already eating the same diet or a similar.

Re:Soft stools - 2007/07/03 18:53 Hi all,
So still some wet poops in the cages today They are being tolerant of the medicine the vet gave me to coat their tummies. They are taking carafate 2-3 times a day. The fecal hasn't come back yet and since tomorrow is the 4th I am not hopeful it will be back til Friday. They otherwise are great,,,its just these darn wet poops that make me worry!

Anyhow to answer the previous questions, yes it is the same mix Mom was eating when she nursed them. The water is tap water and I have been thinking maybe I should go with bottled water for these 3 babies???

I also tried giving them pumpkin (didnt work but they enjoyed eating it and annointing with it) and some Pepto (they loved that stuff and were covered in pink too..hahahaha).

Now they are just eating Special Kitty (took out all the other stuff) do you think I should add the Purina Kitten in with it or switch them to just Purina Kitten??? thanks all!!!

Re:Soft stools - 2007/07/03 23:03 I've never thought about it before, but I guess it would make sense around thanksgiving time but... Is it okay to give hedgehogs canned pumpkin? *~*Steph*~*

Re:Soft stools - 2007/07/05 12:47 I know you are all waiting with bated breath for my "Poop Troop" update. I changed their water to bottled water, added in some Kitten chow and IAMS kitten and continue their "tummy medicine" and I am happy to report we have some nice solid stools today! Julie Pierce
