Re:Artificial light and fall/winter breeding - 2007/07/14 15:04
I establish a regular day/night cycle and maintain it year round. The lights go on around 6:30 am and I turn them off around 10 pm. I use regular lighting as I discussed with Sharon Massena (one of my biggest mentors) years ago and she had already experimented with special day simulation bulbs/UV lighting vs. regular lighting and found it was just the day/night cycle that seemed important. I also make sure that once the lights are off or on they do not get switched back off/on so as to not interrupt the cycle. Other than this last year, where it was AWFUL and I had almost no babies from Oct. to April, I usually have a slight reduction in January and February, and another for about a month around this time of year, but otherwise things stay fairly steady.
