How Much Do You Spend on Bedding in a Year? - 2007/07/14 13:49I buy my bedding in bales, so I don't really know how much bedding costs are for people buying for 1 hedgehog.
So please LMK what type of bedding you buy, as well as the size, cost, and how long it lasts.
Thanks!

Re:How Much Do You Spend on Bedding in a Year? - 2007/07/14 16:29For me a 9 quart/ 10 liter bag of carefresh will last me about a month, but I only put it in digits litter box. When I used to put it in her whole cage I would use a bag a week. The bags cost me 5.50. So if I do the math:

Re:How Much Do You Spend on Bedding in a Year? - 2007/07/14 21:48I get 20 lb bags of cozy n' fresh for 6.00 plus tax and only use it in her litter box. The litter box is just a small cookie sheet under her wheel. I change it twice a week and the bag will last 2 months. If you had your hog in a 10 gallon tank i would say you'd use about half the bag for a good amount in the bottom. So the entire tank would be 6 a week, 24 a month, 288 a year plus tax. Using only the litter pan I spend 36 a year plus tax.
Here's a site for a picture of the litter.. again, it is only 6 bucks at tractor supply..this is not the type of bag it comes in but the pictures at the same on the front.

Re:How Much Do You Spend on Bedding in a Year? - 2007/07/14 22:17So far I have spent around $50.00 in fleece cage lining. This includes two floors worth of material double layered for extra comfort, four different sets, and all the left over material has been used to make tons of hedgie bags, and fleece strips for miss stink to burrow under. I don't know if this would apply to your question though, seeing as it is not disposable bedding. As for litter box, I use yesterday's news for ferrets, around 6 dollars a bag for me with an employee discount, which so far as I can tell is going to last a really, really long time.*~*Steph*~* Cotton, Noodles & Cocoa (hedgehogs), Kuruku & Kimiko (kittehs), Sushi & Lily (Ryukin Goldfish), Rosy & Ruby (beagle sisters), and Archie & Rocky (African Dwarf Frogs).

Re:How Much Do You Spend on Bedding in a Year? - 2007/07/14 23:46Um....Yesterday's news....For bottom level and liners for top level which is half the size of the bottom level. Initial cost of liners plus cleaning cost (estimated for rest of year) is $70 plus bottom layer is $180 so about $250 this year, but I'll still have the liners next year. Man...yesterdays news adds up....good thing I really like it! How much does that stuff cost in the US? And to the person using the Ferret Yesterdays News how does that compare in size and price vs. what I use which is the small animal stuff???

But she tracks her bedding on her two fleece houses and it ends up looking really messy in there. The bedding I use breaks down though..anyway, you like the fleece a lot? The hogs like it too? You just buy it and cut it up into strips? How often to wash it? Thanks so much! here's the site for yesterday's news - I think i may try it! There's a coupon on the site - so I thought I'd post it. http://www.yesterdaysnews.com/?D=302130&T=3963563

Re:How Much Do You Spend on Bedding in a Year? - 2007/07/15 11:40I must be doing something wrong for there is no way I have spent $50 on fleece for my cages and tanks as aislinsadia has. Maybe fleece is more expensive where she is, maybe it doesn't go on sale or there is not a JoAnn Fabrics available with those 50% off coupons.
Of course, I don't double up, for there are two types of fleece hedgies: one that like to be atop the fleece and ones that like to be underneath and that is sometimes my crew.
I have four different sizes cut for two cages and two tanks and they all have 4-6 changes and I have spent about $30.00. Some of the fleece is lightweight, some is medium, and then there is the plushy stuff. I also took the left over sections and cut them into squares and and put under the fleece liner for P-k to cuddle against. Smaller scraps go into a plastic shoe box for them to occasionally play in.
Buying carefresh was costing a fortune AND it was messy, everytime I cleaned the tank or cage I would end up with it outside and have it all over th house. For me it is not the cost or the mess... being able to change the fleece once or twice a day really minimizes the smell of urine in the cage during the summer.

Re:How Much Do You Spend on Bedding in a Year? - 2007/07/15 21:30I use Kaytee brand aspen woodchips. The size on the bag is labeled as "2.0 cubic feet, expands to 4.0 cubic feet," and the cost is $7 or $8 at Petsmart.
I use it for both my hedgehog and two cages of hamsters, and even so it lasts FOREVER (it's been at least 6 months since I bought a bag). However, it's important to keep in mind that in my case, Kumquat is VERY good about using his litter box, so I have to change the woodchips much less frequently than I would if he was using the bathroom all over his cage. I use Yesterday's News (Rabbit) for the litter box.

Re:How Much Do You Spend on Bedding in a Year? - 2007/07/16 04:34In regards to responses to my post- the reason why my fleece cost so much more than yours, isn't because I don't have a Joanne Fabrics (that's where I went) or that the fleece doesn't go on sale. No, I didn't have any coupons. I just bought really cute looking liners with designs and I'm sure I could have went cheaper if I had wanted something more plain. Also, I doubled up on the bedding so that it was more comfortable on her. If I had not doubled up on the bedding, I would have double the amount of bedding to use, which means I would have spent more money than you for more material. I have a cubes and coroplast setup, so I wanted to make the flooring a little more cushy against the hard plastic.
I wash the fleece at least once to twice a week- she has a litter box, and while it doesn't always get used, she tends to crunch her food and leave a mess all over the bottom cage floor >.< So if it weren't for that, I'd probably be washing her bedding at least once a week- with the rest of my load. If you changed the bedding from shavings to fleece, and kept a litter box with something like Yesterday's news, you wouldn't have the tracking problem. I do cut some of the fleece up into strips and she doesn't seem to enjoy burrowing under it as much as I had hoped. I made bigger pieces out of the cloth to use as blankets (which she enjoys) and several hedgie bags.
I hope this helps clear a few things up!*~*Steph*~* Cotton, Noodles & Cocoa (hedgehogs), Kuruku & Kimiko (kittehs), Sushi & Lily (Ryukin Goldfish), Rosy & Ruby (beagle sisters), and Archie & Rocky (African Dwarf Frogs).

Re:How Much Do You Spend on Bedding in a Year? - 2007/07/19 09:34I use Pine! it is kiln dried, made by LM Animal Farms. each bag costs $7.29 the bag has 2700 cu inches, compressed to 1000 cu inches (and yeah it poofs out alot when you open it). I change Kenobi's cage every week and use about 1/3 of the bag to give decent coverage to the bottom of the Manchiro cage. SOOO every month I use 1.3 bags, X 12 months sooo thats 15.6 bags. Rounded up I'll spend about $116.64 every year on Pine bedding.

Re:How Much Do You Spend on Bedding in a Year? - 2007/07/21 08:03the tracking problem is why I eventually stopped using carefresh, even using the fleece with a carefresh corner the minute I pulled out the fleece the carefresh would stray onto my rugs. Realizing P-k was not being used as a poopy corner just to strew about and burrow in... I discontinued using carefresh for her and just stuck to fleece since she mostly poops on the wheel and I can change the fleece once or twice a day. They do enjoy burrowing, and I put a no nap washcloth or teatowel in there AND I've taken large scraps of fleece and cut them in to chunky pieces and throw a pile of them into igloo (they go into a hosiery bag to be washed). Now, I'm supposed to pick up Max today and his owner had been using a variety of different beddings trying to figure out if that is what is giving her hives (without any success in finding the culprit so Max has to go). I've been told he's presently using Yesterday's news, that I will eventually have to reduce and eliminate and get him used to fleece. And for those buying fleece (and P-k likes the plushy kind), I have found good sales this summer so stock up now!

I was quite clear on the cost actually....I said that the TOP level has liners and the BOTTOM level has Yesterday's News.... I paid $70 for liners for the TOP level (cost of someone else to make + double layered with cordoroy outer and fleece centre + prices higher in Canada x by 6 sets of liners) the 180 is for the Yesterday's News..... I've discovered that everything seems to cost a lot more than in the US for hedgehogs...seems to be way more rare that you find someone with one. I wish that I could just pay $26 for liners....but then we weren't terrible fond of the whole liner thing when we had his whole cage with them....we like Yesterday's News better....it's just easier to keep the liners on the top level as he doesn't use it as much and his wheels on the bottom level so thats the level that sees the messy action....

Wet newspaper is very cold and stays cold. Also the inks get all over the hedgehog and make it dirty. Most newspaper ink is made of vegetable dyes now, but not all. Some of it is still printed with toxic inks.

Didn't Standing Bear used to use/ maybe still does the unprinted ends from rolls of newspaper? Don't know if he shreds them or uses them like liners.
But I agree, they would get wet and nasty. Shreaded would be better, but still....

Re:How Much Do You Spend on Bedding in a Year? - 2007/08/05 01:01Hey if it works...go for it! I won't even consider switching off Yesterdays News now though (unless something drastic happens) as it took this long to find a litter we like. Plus where I live in Canada....heating is an issue....I think the newpaper would be too cold....and we get an electronic newpaper....we use recyled newpaper for bedding and save trees by not getting a paper copy of the newpaper....Money wasn't the issue, we just find it works nice! I'm glad newspaper works for you though!

Re:How Much Do You Spend on Bedding in a Year? - 2007/08/05 11:41Somewhere on another post I read (can't remember where now, could be this one as it is long) that they stay away from wood chip bedding because it can lead to ear mites.
Is this true? I'd like to start w/ aspen shavings and move to liners if my hedgie goes mostly in a "litter" area (i'm going to set up a tray under her wheel).Ava's mom!
