hard mealworm thing? - 2007/07/31 15:41 Ok, so the mealies I have.. 4 turned into these hard, non-moving, half morphed worm things. I assume these are pupae..? Why are they so hard? Are they dead? One of them is white and is moving like NUTS.. whats going on here She is dying for a crunchy treat. Yahoo ID: relativelyaddictive

Re:hard mealworm thing? - 2007/07/31 16:20 Love the picture

If you don't keep your mealworms in the refrigerator, they will start to turn into pupa and then beetles, which it sounds like yours are doing. The pupa that are alive will thrash their tails around and are ok to feed your hedgie.

The ones that are hard and not moving are probably dead or close to it and should be thrown out

Re:hard mealworm thing? - 2007/07/31 19:49 dead mealies also tend to be discolored and dark, easy to pick out. I flush them down the toilet just in case they are not dead so they don't crawl out my garbage pail. I've given P-k partially formed pupae, mmmm mmmm good.

So they stay crunchy in milk.

Are they dead?

Probabally not

He's beat boxing, listen closely.

Seriously though, think of it like a cocoon stage.

Re:hard mealworm thing? - 2008/02/06 17:31 Thanks for pulling this up. Goodness I'm funny sometimes. I guess it all depends on which one of my personalities is being dominate at the time.
