Midnight/Starlight/Twilight pregnant??? - 2007/08/04 20:44
Well today I discovered that something I hadn't thought of ( should have but didn't blonde moment what can I say LOL) when my three female and 1 male were brought down to me from Canada the male (who had been in his own carrier for the first day) was placed in the carrier with the girls when they were a day away from me due to his carrier not venting air (it was a two day trip) so I now could have up to 4 pregnant hedgies (I put Wishbone and Addie together for their "date" week since she is around a year old).
Well I have been weighting all 5 of them weekly since July 18 (every Wed) except last night I noticed that Midnight seemed heavier then before so this morning I weighted her and she has gained a 100g since Wed Aug 1. And Twilight while she hasn't gained any major weight (only about 20g) but she is rounder and again I can clearly feel the "v" and the rock hard stomache. I haven't really felt anything with Starlight but I am wondering now if she is too?
So of course I called Becca (that wonderful hedgie breeder near me) and confermed with her that most likely Midnight/Twilight/Starlight? had gotten pregnant on the trip to me (they arrived on July 6th and were all together for 24 hours) and since I have noticed the weight gain with Midnight (which could be a growth spurt but we don't think so) since I can cleary feel the "V" on her belly which is rock hard I have now placed all the new girls (Addie was just with Wishbone last week so I got a bit of time for her yet) in new 90qt containers with Aspen bedding and no liners and in different quiet parts of the house with new nest boxes. And all are now all are on Mommy watch.
Now my question is do I play/hold/pet them or do I just give them food/water and leave them alone?
When we bred hedgehogs at school we only played with them every few days (was on that annoying hour and half school days which switched every other day) and they had their babies during the weekend so the babies were aways a few days old before we discovered them. I know now that you don't touch/play/hold/bother the mom and babies for at 10 days to two weeks but we didn't know that then. The things you don't learn in school.

Now my question is do I play/hold/pet them or do I just give them food/water and leave them alone? Take your cues from the girls and see if they want to be handled or want to be left alone.
Good luck-you may have a busy week

Yep, what Ann said. If the moms come out and seem to want attention, give it to them. If they ignore you or act crabby, give them their space. Becca

Re:Midnight/Starlight/Twilight pregnant??? - 2007/08/14 22:46
Okay, No babies yet however I weighted everyone tonight and Midnight is now up to 500g and is HUGE!!! Twilight has also gotten "rounder" and is now up to 400g so both have gained 100g in the last few days. Plus their bellies are hard and yet soft (kinda) and if you rub your fingers gently you will feel things moving...??? Now if they did get pregnant on the trip that means it happened on the 6th of July so it should be happing any day from now until end of Sept right?
However also Starlight seems to have a bit harder of a stomache she is still weighting the same so don't know yet about her.
Addie has also gained 100g in the last few days and is up to 500g herself. Sooo we will have to wait and see on her as her earliest date is Friday but hey you never know right.

Congrats to all the mom's to be!
I'm wondering what you are gonna do with all the baby hedgies when they are grown?
I would like to get a female later in on in my life and possibly breed her once just to experience the joy of baby hedgies, but only if I could find adequate homes for all of them. Is it hard to find buyers?

The babies are generally not hard to find homes for...because of that, I can afford to be very picky on who gets a baby!
Starnight~
It sounds like you have some pregnant mommas! Keep us updated! Also, the gestation period is usually 35 days, so they should be having their babies any day now if the truly are pregnant!

Now if they did get pregnant on the trip that means it happened on the 6th of July so it should be happing any day from now until end of Sept right? From day 35 which already went by to around day 50 or so from the last time they were together. Hope you have your mommy cages ready.
I would like to get a female later in on in my life and possibly breed her once just to experience the joy of baby hedgies, The problem with that is it is possible to lose the mom due to complications of the pregnancy. Also very possible to lose the babies too. There is a lot that can go wrong. You don't always get to experience anything close to joy, unfortunately.

Very true Ann, I remember when we bred hedgehogs in school how often we lost all the babies and half the time the mom as well. But that was 10 years ago and they housed the males and females together. We have learned so much since then. Yes my moms are in 90qt Sterilight containers with a nest box xl large wooden box that my father made for each one with a hole drilled in the top back corner (which I covered with a piece of fleece that i can lift to look into the box but not distrube the moms). Also Twilight and Midnight are in my closet (in my bedroom) and Addie and Starlight are in the back corner of the kitchen area am getting ready to move them though back into another closet. Will keep every posted and will let everyone know when I hear squeaking.
However no I am not having a hard time finding homes for the babies I already have three people contact me about them as well as I have my Tails for Trails Event this weekend.

Re:Midnight/Starlight/Twilight pregnant??? - 2007/08/20 22:13
Hey Everyone, Well no babies born yet but 3 out of the 4 girls bite me tonight (which is not normal behavior as even my pricky Addie has never bit me before and it wasn't hard but it was clearly an "okay mom quit looking and feeling my belly and put me back in my home, which I did about 5 minutes later don't want to teach them that biting get them put down)and all are really jumpy and appear to be having either true labor pains or brackshicks, Also confermed tonight that both Starlight and Addie (two of who were the biters tonight) are infact pregnant as not only can I feel nipples I can see each and everyone and all the skin around it plus all have hard tummys and a "zipper" feeling in the v. Also questions all the girls have been living in the same room (expect for the other day when I moved Twilight and Midnight into my closet) and I was wondering if like some humans if they will all go into labor together or close together? And is keeping them in the closet a good idea or should I put them back out into the quad area that they had all been living in? And should I leave Wishbone cage next to Addie's and Starlight like it currently is or will that make the momma upset? Thanks for all the help guys and I expect babies soon and will post when they arrive.

I've heard that in general, you should never keep a hedgehog in the closet, regardless of pregnancy... Hopefully others will chime in on the rest of your questions- they are ones I've wondered myself Good luck on all the babies... WOW will you be one busy hedgie mommy when they are all born!

What I would do: If you think they are in labor and do not want to be handled(cause they are biting), just let them be no matter where their cages are. The time they are most likely to get agitated from change, noise, etc. is right after they give birth especially if they are first time moms. You want them to give birth and figure out how to take care of those babies with as little human interruption as possible.

Ann, Okay I just saw your post after I had moved the girls (DUH) but I only moved Addie and Starlight away from Wishbone and into a quiet corner. I still have Midnight and Twilight in the closet. All seem to be doing okay no squeaks yet but they sure are not acting like normal. Will keep everyone posted.

BABY HOGLETS HAVE ARRIVED!!!!! Addie is now the proud momma of 4(i think) newborn baby hoglets and everyone appears to be doing fine. Bad me I was checking on everyone and didn't think anything of picking up her nest box as she is just now 35 days today,Twilight and Midnight were next to their boxes eatting so I checked there box. Nothing. Then Addie and Starlight were both sleeping in their nest boxes and I didnt see anything when I peeked in and so just grabbed the box and lifted it up and thats when I saw a baby. I quickly placed it back down making sure to keep the nest in the middle. Then laid a nice grouping of mealworms and out comes Addie and starts eating and I look into the hole in the nest box (the front one) and see at least 4 babies. so
Will keep everyone posted about everyone else.

Be sure to just leave her alone. Only intrude if she is out of food/water or if you think something is wrong! Don't even try to touch/hold the babies until they are at least 10 days old, probably more like 2 weeks old.
I'm sure you're excited, but it's better safe than sorry!
Congrats!

Emily, Thank you No way am I even going to try to touch or get near those babies until they are 2 weeks old. That is why I feel so bad about picking up the nest box as I have always planned to leave them completey alone from the time I hear squeaking until they are two week old. But thank you again.
