Re:Midnight/Starlight/Twilight pregnant??? - 2007/09/03 11:39 Yeah most of my babies...at least 1/2 usually have a very cool skunk stripe when they are very little. I haven't had one yet keep it...it would be very cool though if they did!!!!! Julie Pierce

Re:Midnight/Starlight/Twilight pregnant??? - 2007/09/04 11:29 i'm curious...do breeders tend to name their baby hedgies as they raise them for the first 6 weeks, even though they'll be giving them eventually to other ppl who will come up with a new name? and if so, do you ever tell the new owner what you've been calling the hedgie up till now?

I give mine 'names' just so I can tell them apart (i.e. 'girl one', 'boy one' etc). I find when I give them a real name I become too attached to them & it is even harder to let them go!

Re:Midnight/Starlight/Twilight pregnant??? - 2007/09/04 15:53 I usually try not to name my babies BUT if there is something very distinguishing about them I usually end up giving them a nickname for my own amusement. For instance "Peanut" was the smallest hedgehog baby we ever had and "Casanova" was the horniest hedgehog baby we ever had. I do agree that naming them can make separating from them more difficult and names can "put off" some customers or make them feel compelled to keep the name even if they dont like it. Julie Pierce

Re:Midnight/Starlight/Twilight pregnant??? - 2007/09/06 22:44 Baby Hedgehogs Arrived!!!"
Starlight has had a litter of three (That I know of) and about gave me a heart attack as well. Tonight as I did my checking I didn't hear any noise or see any movement from Starlight's cage. So I started calling to her and normally she will pop and hiss and then coming running out for her mealworm as well as to see what I have put in her food dish. But tonight she didn't come out so I raised the nest box and SHE DIDN"T MOVE not a pop/hiss nothing. And she was spred out on her side in what for her is not a natural position. I thought she was dead. So with my heart in my throat I ran over to turn on the lights and when I reached down she moved and I see that she as at least 3 babies as those were laying next to her and now I understand she was feeding them and feel asleep but for that first moment I really thought I had lost her. So while I am thrilled that she had a litter (if not really sure how she had her litter as she hasn't been with Wishbone by any means since she came here July 6th) as she is the alpha female and so I didn't trust her with anyone not even the other girls and as she was so young I had no intention of breeding her until like Halloween. But you know how it goes man plans Gods laugh.

Re:Midnight/Starlight/Twilight pregnant??? - 2007/09/07 19:53 Thanks everyone!!!
Actually Emily I thought I had 9 babies except as I was scoping out poopy litter from Starlights cage she came out of the nest box to say hi and I looked into the nestbox and there aren't 3 babies there are 5!!!!
Which brings the total number of baby hedgehogs at Lots Of Love Exotic Small Animal Kennel to 11 and TOTAL hedgehogs 16.
WOW!!!!!
Are we sure these guys aren't related to rabbits/gerbils/mice?

Agreed! I just had a first time mom who had TEN babies... Poor girl, not all of them survived, but she did try. She's now being watched closely, and I have a call in to my vet alerting them that I may have a girl in need of emergency attention.

Re:Midnight/Starlight/Twilight pregnant??? - 2007/09/08 13:49 *knocking wood* she's up and eating and drinking now - good signs for sure. Now, I'd like to see her pottying normally too, and then I'll start to relax some.

Sorry I was a damper on the awesome news that Dani (am I spelling that right?) has with her crew - thats fabulous!!

Re:Midnight/Starlight/Twilight pregnant??? - 2007/09/14 22:50 okay here are the pictures I promised a few day ago my camera wasn't working then these pictures were taken early today when I marked (which Addie did her dardest to lick off) the hoglets. Also while Addie does still have all 4 babies one was put on reserved tonight so I am not showing "Snuggle's" picture . But here are the other three (which are for adoption on Halloween) and I would love to hear from you old hands at calling colors to tell me what I have. I believe I have basic/standard gray for all 4 babies but take a look and give me your input please. Thank you.
PS BOTH of Midnight babies are Pintos (if small spots right now) will have pictures of her son and daughter tomorrow.

PPS Starlight still has 5 plumb and healthy babies and Twilight is due Sept 26 or so will let everyone know when she delivers.
