Re:TOYS - 2005/10/12 01:10 I would say that the number one favorite toy among my hedgehogs would be a plain old toilet paper tube. As in, the little cardboard insert in the middle of the roll. They shove their heads in them, and then madly thrash around the cage. If you pull the tube off, they often give you a nasty look, and promptly shove their heads back into the tube.
Other options include the plastic cat balls, preferably the solid kind. The ones with the many gaps can get stuck on a hedgehog's mouth, and cause major problems. You can also get cat toys at kmart at least that are made out of things similar to the little craft pompoms. These come in some adorable critter shapes, and greatly amuse a lot of my hedgehogs.
Essentially anything that is pushable, pullable, carryable, rollable, etc. can be considered for a hedgehog toy, as long as it doesn't have any sharp edges, small peices, loose threads, etc. If it is something that could be considered safe for a small child, it is typically safe for a hedgehog. Half of the fun of having a hedgehog is seeing what your individual hedgehog enjoys. One of the hedgehogs I had very early on in my hedgehog ownership days laid claim to a baby sock of my daughters. You could take it away from him, and the next time he was out of his cage for play time, he would end up finding another one and dragging it across the floor.

Re:TOYS - 2005/10/13 06:37 My brothers hedghog really loves his toilet roll. I think that it is the only thing that he does enjoy playing with.

Re:TOYS - 2005/10/14 17:26 My hedgies like toilet paper rolls you can make your own by rolling up pieces of paper or foam paper works a little bit better. They also like their sleeping bags you can just throw a piece of fabric and they will play with it. Also they like small cat toys that they can drag around or make noises.

Re:TOYS - 2005/10/14 20:50 When I had my first hedgie, he loved small scraps of "polar fleece" material. I'd scent them for a day or so by carrying them around (ahem) in my bra, and then he'd have the most fun ever cuddling/flipping them up in the air, etc.

I also had a wooden parrot toy with a bell. He'd ring it for supper at precisely 7 pm every day XD

Re:TOYS - 2005/10/15 02:40 I love it! I'd be scared for any of my crew to learn a trick like that, they'd be ringing it whenever they could think of anything for me to do or get them! Ours love some of the small fabric cat toys, but they tend to vanish somewhere between taking them out of the cages to wash them and getting them put back in. Might have something to do with the thundering herd of cats. We have found some incredibly cool cat toys at Atwoods, one is a weird ball made up of triangle thingies that they can grab the edges of, and one is a jack made up of loops. They're hard to explain. (obviously) Ours pretty much enjoy anything they can get in their mouths to explore. They're worse than toddlers about that! A word of warning: We used to buy the cool eight packs of balls they sell at WalMart, the ones that have the bars on the sides. We stopped after we had one of our boys get one caught rather effectively on his lower jaw. He and both of us were traumatized by the time we got it off, and I refuse to take the chance of it ever happening again.

Re:TOYS - 2005/10/15 18:06 That bell. It would ring sporadically whenever he wanted me after a time! For potential new hedgies, I'd rethink that strategy now.

*rofl*

I love those large "hamster balls" too. I had a glow-in-the-dark one for Sniffer, and my older poodle I had at the time thought it was the most amusing thing to watch him roll all around at night. (Supervised, of course! Those latches sometimes pop open when an overenthusiastic hedgie slams into a wall at full speed. Ow.)

Oooh. That sounds traumatizing. The poor little guy!
