Water Dish/Bottle Question - 2007/08/09 09:39 I decided to pamper my soon-to-be arriving new hedgehog, and found an AMAZING deal on a Marchioro Tommy 120. The dimensions are 47.25"(l) x 23" (w) x 22'' (h). It is HUGE, but is going to give her TONS of space to play when I am at school. Needless to say, she is being spoiled on a daily basis and I don't even have her yet!

The main question I have deals with the following issue:
The plastic bottom has a much higher height than I thought, and the 8oz. water bottle I purchased is going to be WAY too far off the ground for her to reach. Is there anyone here who has a Tommy 120 and found a water bottle that works? If no, can anyone recommend some water dishes that are harder to knock over?

Re:Water Dish/Bottle Question - 2007/08/09 10:08 I got Quentin a water bottle and found that it still leaked a little even though it is supposed to be leak-proof, and also he drank WAAAAAY too much with it. I couldn't tell if it was a problem he had or if he just couldn't get enough water out of it at a time. Turns out it was the latter problem. Once he got himself a water bowl, all was well again.

I just looked in the cat section at meijer. They have some really pretty ceramic small cat food/water dishes that are very hard to tip over. Occasionally you will find shavings or food crumbs in it, but since you have to clean it out everyday that's no problem. And they are decently heavy enough for even the heftiest hedge to have a hard time to tip over.

Re:Water Dish/Bottle Question - 2007/08/09 10:10 Also I have the smaller Marchioro cage, since my room has limited space, and you need to take into account the raise ur little hog will get with the couple inches of bedding he will have in his cage. If you are using a liner, then you will have problems. Still, I'd recommend a bowl over bottle. Jessica

Re:Water Dish/Bottle Question - 2007/08/09 17:37 My digit doesn't really know what to dod with a bowl but I think maybe if she really wanted to she could drink out of it. I had a problem with water bottles because when I first got her I got a water bottle from walmart and about a day later I figured out that the suction in the bottle was too great and she couldn't get any water out of it. so I immidatly put water in a bowl and she drank. Now I just leave a bowl of water and a new water bottle for her so that she will always have water. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:Water Dish/Bottle Question - 2007/08/13 22:50 Thanks for the current replies ... but to go back to my original question ... is there anyone on here that uses the Marchioro Tommy 120 that has found a water bottle that their hedgie can reach? I would prefer not putting holes in the cage if it is not necessary! Kristyn (Tessie and Tabatha (a.k.a. Tabby))

Re:Water Dish/Bottle Question - 2007/08/14 05:42 I have a marchioro cage, and the water bottle I'm using came with a tightly coiled metal spring with two clips on either end. You can rest the bottom of the bottle on the edge of the plastic base, and then tightly clip the top to the wire part of the cage. Once all the bedding is in the bottom of the cage, the nozzle of the bottle is at the perfect height. You could also use a pipe cleaner or a large twist-tie to secure the bottle. Hope this helps!

Re:Water Dish/Bottle Question - 2007/08/14 07:48 How tall is the bottom pan? I have a bunch of marchioro's here and have not had a problem with them reaching the bottle. Ann

Re:Water Dish/Bottle Question - 2007/08/14 09:58 We started Hufflepuff with a bowl, but then got concerned after watching him eat. He stands with his front two legs IN the bowl and we worried that if he did the same with the water it would be contaminated by the 'stuff' he runs in at night. We switched to a bottle (which I'm pretty sure the breeder said she'd used with him) and I don't think he drank all night. We worried more about dehydration (can you tell we are new hedgie parents? worry is the new theme of the house) and put the bowl back. We watched him really close that night, waited up to watch him drink & he never put his feet in the water bowl! So we are sticking with a bowl and the bottle has been moved over to the pile of things we've bought that he just doesn't care for (like any toys other than the wheel).

Re:Water Dish/Bottle Question - 2007/08/14 14:20 Walmart has one in the pet section. It has a little black hanger on it and can hang on the inside of the cage. When she gets bigger, you can hang the bottle normally and she'll be able to reach it.

Re:Water Dish/Bottle Question - 2007/08/15 12:16 Max came with a bin that had a flat-bac bottle outside, they drilled two holes into the sterilite - one for the screw holder and the other for the water bottle spicket. It was quite ingenious. If you had to you could drill just a single hole for the spicket into your tray side.

could you hang the bottle inside the cage, and lower it enough so the spicket is within its reach. When I go away over night I fasten a bottle to the back of the whisper wheel stand (it's flat coroplast and very sturdy) and the bottle hangs inside the cage. You'd be hanging the bottle on the same wires whether it is outside or inside the cage, just move the bottle inside and down lower. that is what I would try.
