Ok...thanks for explaining it to me! So I guess you guys don't know what is in the higher end food that was causing it!?!...or could it be that the lower end foods have more corn which is less digestible, then they can eat a lot & not gain weight? Just an idea

Thanks!

But it wasn't just my hedgehog's weight that improved, it was all aspects of health. I don't know what the reason is, and I don't have billions of dollars to do a study. It works, so I'm sold.

Possibly all the 'human grade' ingredients just aren't being digested right or they have too much nutrition for our little guys. Think of a human body that gets too much nutrition....like a person who turns orange from eating too many carrots...... maybe something like that is happening.

What it really comes down to is that people and hedgehogs are totally different. To us all these high grade stuff sounds good, but to a hedgehog it's just not the right combination of stuff.

I'll put it blunter: If the poop beetle needs a diet of poop to survive, then feeding him free range chicken and organic lettuce isn't doing him any good.

My understanding from the nutritionist I was working with briefly (and long ago, so forgive my laymens terms here!) is that the higher end foods have more complex proteins and less of the basic, already broken down ones that some of the mid-range and lower end foods have. The more complex the source is, the harder the digestive system has to work = burnt out kidneys and livers. So there ya go.

Re:Purina Kitten?? - 2007/08/20 19:33 That would make sense Stasi.
My old schnauzer had a habit of getting into the cats food so much when he was fifteen years old that it caused liver damage because according to my vet, cat food has A LOT more protein and complex proteins than dogs food.
