new hedgie - 2007/08/26 20:21 Hi, I recently purchased a cute little hedgie (4 days ago). I was wondering how long does it take for the little girl to get used to me (us...). When I purchased her from the breeder, she was nice and gentle, the first day home she was ok, mild huffing and very fast out of her ball, but now its like I have a banshee. She huffes, cliks and stays in a ball for about a minute and then she is very nervous, every noise makes her jump and lower her head quills.
I start handling her around 7:00 pm.

Whats a new owner to do?

Chuck.

Re:new hedgie - 2007/08/26 20:37 Just be patient

When your lil girl was at her breeders she was in her own surroundings with a familiar smell. Now your hedgie is in a new place, with new smells & a new surrounding. Its totally normal for her to be a little nervous from time to time. She will warm up to you. Just keep at it.

You can always stick a garment of worn clothing in her cage at night (like a t shirt) and that will get her used to your smell.

Re:new hedgie - 2007/08/26 21:58 Ya, what she said.

I usually tell people that it takes them about a week and a half to 2 weeks to settle in. Make sure hedgie's cage is in a quiet place where she isn't disturbed by other loud pets, specifically dogs or birds. If you smoke, she could be bothered by the nicotine smell.

There are some articles over in our articles section that you may benefit by reading.

Re:new hedgie - 2007/08/27 04:18 Hi Chuck-Some hedgies are used to their new homes really quickly but most take at least a few weeks. She will come around-just be patient and spend time getting to know her Ann
