rehab for rescued hog - 2007/08/28 11:33 so...still haven't named my hedgehog. He was a rescue from a goth kid who though a hedgehog was the perfect little creature. He came infested with mites, a nasty secondary infection, long toenails and really really stinky!

after 2 weeks he had enough strength to ball up and huff. I pick him up every night at around 9-12 and make sure he spends at least 10 minutes outside of the cage.

It seems to be working because there were only a few grumpy noises and I got cute little chirps when he settled down in my hands.

Right now he won't play with toilet roll tubes or toys...any suggestions on my hedgehog rehab center to get him playing?

BTY he looks a little less like Jaba the Hut now that he has a wheel.

Re:rehab for rescued hog - 2007/08/28 12:14 I don't think you can get a hog to play, some just don't prefer toys. Mine likes tubes but pretty much only moves his cat toys around when they are in his way. Maybe try putting a favorite treat of his on the other side of a tube? Jessica

My critter list: Dilbert (welsh terrier), Bowser R.I.P. (betta fish), Quentin (hedgehog).

Re:rehab for rescued hog - 2007/08/28 12:22 have you thought about calling him Jabba - brings a smile to my face. If he came from a Goth kid, maybe you could call him Lord Byron.

With really unsocial hedgies I found that getting them up in the middle of the night, during their active and awake time, they were much more receptive to being handled and within a few weeks they started to trust me. So, if you are getting up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night or to get a drink of water, detour over to your hedgie's unit and take him out for a few minutes.

as for toys, they are all different. Pippi had a big red bow she would charge at and flip over, wouldn't touch a toilet paper tube. P-k loves toilet paper tubes. Max doesn't bother with balls, tp tubes, but really likes the playpen relay I have made: extra wheel at one end, two different tubes to run through, and at the far end an upside down kleenex box. He likes to go into the kleenex box, turn around and come back out and go through the tubes again. No one here likes stuffed toys but I've heard some hedgies like to tug at them. Most hedgies like sweaty socks!

Re:rehab for rescued hog - 2007/08/28 17:46 Ava really likes running through PVC. I got a splitter one with two outlets. "Jaba" would probably need a big one though but I think they sell them.

Ava didn't play with PT tubes right away but we would roll them toward her sometimes and eventually she started butting them with her head and then walking around with them ON her head

Re:rehab for rescued hog - 2007/08/28 18:15 P-k runs all over the bed with toilet paper tubes on her head. I played a video tape of her on my public access tv show last Friday and called it amazing animal impersonations - at a funeral I went to today someone came up to me and told me how much they liked the little animal pretending to be an elephant!

Re:rehab for rescued hog - 2007/08/29 06:16 For toys, you can try tubes, cat balls, matchbox cars, little beany baby type animals, kleenex boxes, other boxes with the ends cut out so it is like a tunnel. No sharp edges or little pieces-just like a little kid. Sooner or later you will probably find something he enjoys.

No name? How about Harpo

Re:rehab for rescued hog - 2007/08/29 11:16 Max really loves the upside down kleenex box, he doesn't snooze in it - it's like he knows this is just for his play corral. He'll go in, turn around inside a couple of times, come out and then run the relay through the tubes to get back to the wheel at the other end.
