Newbie worry - 2007/09/12 16:15 Hi everyone
I got my first hedgie on Saturday. He's an 11wk old chocolate snowflake (according to his breeder, although I can't see any difference between him and a chocolate) that i've called Hector.
When I try to pick him up he does the usual hissing and popping, but once i'm holding him he quickly uncurls and (although obviously still scared) wanders over me and cuddles up at my neck. My problem is that when I put him back in the cage he burys himself in his bedding and won't come out again for hours (last night, after I had him out for 10 minutes at about 9pm, he didn't venture out of his hidey-hole until after 3.30am and then only for 10 minutes!). I was worried that maybe he was cold (well we are in Scotland so the temperature is never very high) so I got him a sugglesafe microwaveable heat pad, but that has made no difference.
But, my major worry is that he is not really eating. He hasn't even looked at the dried cat food the breeder used, and I've tried wet cat food, chicken, babyfood, etc, but he won't touch any of it in his bowl. The only way that i can get him to eat anything is to hand feed him. He would eat as many mealworms as I can give him, has taken the odd mouthful of chicken and today I managed to get him to eat 4 chunks of wet cat food, but that's it! I was expecting him to be nervous but if anything I though that it would be the other way around and he would eat from the bowl but not my hand.
I know that it's early days but I'm really concerned, I would hate for him to end up making himself ill.

Re:Newbie worry - 2007/09/12 16:40 Their stomachs are not really big. 1 to 2 tablespoons of food is around what they would eat in a day. He may be eating less and hiding more because everything is new to him still. Don't overwhelm him with food choices. Give him the food from the breeder and a bit of whatever else you plan on feeding him on a permanent basis. Changing foods too quickly can cause stomach upset so try to make changes gradually. Keep us posted Ann

Re:Newbie worry - 2007/09/16 15:45 You could also put an old shirt that you have slept in with him. That will help him get used to your smell. If you get a food scale, try weighing him every few days. If he's gaining weight, you're doing fine! Don't change up his food too much as that will upset him. Don't feed TOOO many mealies, either. I know it's tempting when they love them so much. He may just be holding out for the meal worms! Helen

Re:Newbie worry - 2007/09/16 15:46 Hector finally started eating wet cat food out of his dish a couple of days ago and i've heard the odd crunch of dried cat food during the night.
I'm now going to take the wet food away and hopefully he will start eating more of the dried stuff.
The only problem with the dried food (Hill's Science Plan), that the breeder (who worked in the pet shop I got him from) gave me, has over 20% fat. It's apparently what he is used to, so in a few weeks, once he's more settled, I'll slowly start mixing in Royal Canin Light, to try and switch him over.
I wish that I could get some of the breeders mixes that people on this forum talk about, but unfortunately I don't think any of the breeders in the uk do them.
But anyway, I'm just happy that Hector has started eating properly. I've had him a week now and he really seems to have settled down and got used to me and his new surroundings. Now I just need to get him a little bit more sociable with other people.
