how exactly do you cuddle with a hedgehog? - 2007/09/13 11:00
i'm really curious. Penelope has been with me for about 3 weeks now, and i still have no idea how to "cuddle" with her. do i put her in a towel? or do i let her crawl all over me?

I used to have a flannel cozy sack that Pippi would crawl into and I'd nestle it into my arms and hold her. The same with Max and his fleece igloo, I pick him up, hold him while watching tv... at some point he'll stick his head out and see it's me that has him outside the bin and he'll either venture out or go back to sleep. The only time Pippi ever left the cozy to cuddle against my neck was when she was sick (and she was really sick and wanted warmth, she was put to rest a couple of days later). P-k does not like to be held, but after she's had time to run around and has wound down and goes and hides in the fold of some fabric John will pick her up and put her into the clam cozy and hold her on his lap while he watches the rest of his tv program. That's how we cuddle with our hedgies, in their favorite cloth cozy or igloo.

I sit down, holding Satin in my arms. Sometimes she likes to roam about, but settles down after awhile. When she's feeling sleepy, she pushes her nose into the crook of my arm and rests. I've also sat back and lifted the edge of my t-shirt, she runs in, and settles down on my tummy. She likes to feel covered. So the shirt over her or her hiding her little face on the inside of my elbow seems to do the trick.
Thinking about that, I'd suggest giving her a little place to hide when she's on you. And doing it while she's a bit on the sleepy side.

I just have a simple ferret pouch with a vellux blanket cut to size inside, wait for Baron to go in and pick him up. I usually lean back in my computer chair, or the couch or where ever I happen to be and let him lay on my chest. Once he's fully awake he'll come out and wander around on the desk/floor for a bit then climb up onto me and curl up on my chest or neck and sleep for a bit, or demand to get down by cautiously looking over my shoulder at the ground.
I think I have the only actual "snuggly" hedgehog...I've been reading posts and mine's the only one who, while being in perfect health and mind, will come snuggle up against me and just hang out, he's awak because I can hear him snuffling and once in a while he decides to lick my neck or jaw....
Mostly I think you have to let your hedgie tell you how she wants to be snuggled with

Yep-true. You can let her crawl all over you if you want. Some like to burrow in hair, crook of arm, in a sweater or hoodie pocket or simply on top of you. Others will just not want to sit still for anything resembling cuddling and thats ok too

Ava loves sweatshirt pockets of pouches and will ride around for hours sleeping and snuggling. I just lift them open and she runs in and makes herself comfy. She also likes to hang out in your sleeves.
I hold her and if she is in a cuddly mood she just finds a spot she can burry her head and curl up (crook of the arm or if you sit indian style she'll curl up in your lap).

I would be afraid Ms. Pickles would poop and pee all over me. She poops quite a bit when I get her out to play. I don't know about you guys, but I don't want poop all over the inside of my clothes. Ew!

I'm not too keen on that either. I play with Satin until she's done with her pooping and peeing, then we cuddle. I sneak in a little cuddling before the poops, but I'm leery of spending too much time that way - for obvious reasons. I've also been able to learn her habits - if she's snuggled down on her side of splatted on her tummy, she's not going to make a mess. But if I feel she's getting antsy, it's back to the litter box.

The morning after I picked up Pippi she crawled into my sweatshirt pocket - awww how cute --- then she took a huge dump! At that point I knew she had adopted us and made herself at home!

Hagrid likes to sleep in the hood of my hoodie while I'm at the computer. I can sort of pull it up on my shoulder so I can turn my head to look at him, but I'm mostly protected from accidental pokes.

Exactly! I only put him in there right after I wake him up and he's still sleepy and a little grouchy. He'll just snooze until until the mouse clicking gets his curiosity going and he starts to get wiggly. That also usually means a poo is coming. I found that out the hard way the other night when I looked and saw a big poo out of the corner of my eye. He made sure to point his butt toward my face too for good measure. Now I know that once he starts to wake up its back to the cage for a potty and snack break before run around time. But he's never tried to take a leap from my shoulder. I'm always really careful and put him in a safe place if he acts like he wants to roam!

As Tessie has gotten a bit older, she has become a snuggler late at night. It is so cute. I usually have her on my stomach while watching tv or a movie at night, and she comes up under my chin, cuddles next to me, and sleeps. I definitely enjoy these moments with her!!

I usually lay on the couch with my girls (one at a time) and a towel. They are free to run around on me and the couch, but have the towel to snuggle in or hide under (hubby gets loud when sports are on tv). They seem to enjoy it and I rarely get pooped on anymore (a definite plus).

It's funny, Satin is usually such a good snuggler. But three nights this week, she was a rather huffy hog, and this human was on the receiving end of several poops. This happens once every few weeks. Doesn't seem like anything was out of place or she was ill or anything. Just being grumpy, I suppose.
But I felt like a bad hedgiemom since she seemed so displeased with anything/everything I was doing. To make it all the more intense, she kept staring at my face... looking right at me while huffing and popping.
Fortunately, she was back to her cuddley self last night Phew! A few more nights like that, I'm likely to develop a complex!
