Just wondering if this mix is good... - 2007/09/26 16:52 I've been trying different stuff out and so long as it's not meal worms Baron will eat it...which, theoretically speaking, is good! But he could honestly careless what's in his food, so that's my job!

I'm currently mixing 50/50 Royal Canin Kitten food with Purina One Kitten Chow with one, sometimes two, crickets every couple of nights (He gets them after his out time I can't stand seeing, or hearing, the little demon eat those things)

Just wondering what you veterans think of this mix?

Re:Just wondering if this mix is good... - 2007/09/26 20:31 I've been told that Chicken Soup for Cat Lovers Soul is a staple in most hedgie mixes.

And I have this comparison for treats:

dried mealies are like potato chips, they disappear way too fast

live mealies are a healthy snack like nuts, nutritious but fattening

crickets are like cannoli's

pk was getting three crickets a day from her previous owner, that's three cannoli's a day - waaaay too much. I cut her back to one, and now it's an occasional treat.

are you feeding live or canned crickets? Right now Pk is getting medicine sprinkled on a cricket, it does gross me out to find legs left in the dish.

Re:Just wondering if this mix is good... - 2007/09/26 21:17 I have searched high and low but I can't find CSFTCLS anywhere up here (up here being Alberta, Canada)

As for crickets they're freeze dried because I'm in an apartment so I can't have live insects here.

How old is your hedgie? Having just kitten food in your mix you may have a mix that is too high in fat. At some point I would switch from RC kitten (20% fat) to the RC adult light (9% fat) and/or switch from Purina one kitten (18% fat) to Purina one healthy weight (9% fat). Transition them in slowly as you run low on the other foods.

The crickets are fine every couple of days-just don't overdo it.

Re:Just wondering if this mix is good... - 2007/09/27 12:47 Royal Canin is a top shelf food and pretty rich. I used to have it in my food, but I cut it out when my hedgehogs were getting porky. Purina One kitten is great and usually in my mix, I would consider it a medium high food. My advice would be to keep those and add some Purina cat or Purina kitten. They seem to benefit from the fillers in the food.

Crickets are not like cannolis. Hedgehogs are insectivores. Their bodies were designed to eat insects. Crickets have a lot of fiber in them; the whole outer carcass is nothing but fiber and everyone needs fiber. Yes, they do have some fat in them, but it is not that much. 2 crickets every few nights is fine. Everything in moderation.

If you live in Edmonton, the only place that has it is G&E Pharmacy (on 73st & 82ave).

If you aren't in Edmonton, check the company's website... and use the find a retailer tool.
