Can baby brothers get along after they grow up? - 2007/09/30 17:08 Hi everyone!

My boyfriend and I just got a 8-week old boy today. And we are considering getting him a companion because my boyfriend used to have a pet hedgehog when he was a kid and his hedgehog was pretty lonely.

I have read about females having better chances getting along well. But how about two brothers? Will brothers get along well? I have seen our hedgehog interacted with his siblings and they got along great. Does that promise anything when they reach sexual maturity?

We're giving him the first 24-hour private time right now. But I couldn't help but peek into his cage from time to time. He's just too adorable. We're really excited to have him with us!

Re:Can baby brothers get along after they grow up? - 2007/09/30 19:07 Hedgehogs are naturally solitary animals - and usually most male hedgehogs (whether litter mates or not) will become territorial and will fight. However you do have the odd case or two where they get along, but this shouldn't be hoped for in any way shape or form.

Basically, don't get your MALE hedgehog a cage mate, no matter what gender. Female hedgehogs CAN get along with each other, but they're just like humans, some people you can get along with...others you picture yourself punching them in the face until they choose to quit being who they are

Other than that I think I need to learn your boyfriend's trick on reading hedgehog emotions how can you tell when a hedgehog is lonely? More specifically how can you tell when a solitary animal is lonely?

but! Grats on your new hedgie hope you three have a good time together.

Re:Can baby brothers get along after they grow up? - 2007/10/01 05:47 Hi there-congratulations on your new hedgehog

Hedgehogs are soilitary animals and do not need another hedgehog around to be happy.

Once they mature, most male hedgehogs will fight-sometimes to the death. The reason yours and his brother were getting along is they were only 8 weeks old. Once they grow up they have to be separated.

Re:Can baby brothers get along after they grow up? - 2007/10/01 07:45 yup, what they said.

Enjoy your little boy. You and your BF are the only companions he needs. Adding another male into the mix would be dangerous and the 2 boys will most likely fight.

Re:Can baby brothers get along after they grow up? - 2007/10/02 22:06 question for Kelly about putting two boys together - I know housing them together is a definite no-no. How about putting them together for short periods of time (not playtime, just to attend to something that you don't need to carry a hedgehog to). At present I have a girl and a boy, and we have to do socializing totally separate and take great care not to put them on the bed together even for a minute to avoid a mating quickie! Such strict separation is a hassle... if they were both female we could have them together briefly without major problems. My question - can you put two males together briefly or will they charge each other?

Most males will fight even if they are together briefly

Re:Can baby brothers get along after they grow up? - 2007/10/03 06:46 thank you, I hope that will be helpful to anyone thinking about purchasing a second male hedgehog.

Keeping hedgehogs TOTALLY SEPARATE is such a hassle. Pk goes into the tub for her daily footy soak while I clean her bin. Max I usually put in his play run except it's been disassembled for disinfecting and I didn't get home last night in time to do it. Would have been so easy if I could have just plunked him into the bathtub with P-k while I cleaned his bin. Luckily he is such a good guy, I just picked up his cozy and put him into a cardboard box for safe keeping - he never woke up.

Re:Can baby brothers get along after they grow up? - 2007/10/03 10:35 I have smaller plastic bins that the hedgehogs go in while I am scrubbing their cage. It makes life with multiple hedgehogs much easier.
I agree that girls are more tolerant than boys when you can put them together temporarily - however, if you're trying to quarantine one, that obviously isn't going to work.

Re:Can baby brothers get along after they grow up? - 2007/10/03 16:37 It isn't worth chancing it. I've seen boys sniff each other out and try to fight in a latter of seconds. It just isn't worth the risk of having to run to the hospital.

Re:Can baby brothers get along after they grow up? - 2007/10/03 23:02 I just take Quent's igloo out and turn it upside-down and put his fabric in it, he snuggles in there and goes to sleep while I clean everything. Jessica

Re:Can baby brothers get along after they grow up? - 2007/10/04 06:17 how nice that Quent is so well behaved... I wouldn't trust my hedgies to stay put in a non-secure place... they are far too curious and that is part of their charm. Just keeps the mommy person on her toes!

Re:Can baby brothers get along after they grow up? - 2007/10/04 22:11 Today a friend dropped off a cage for me to use to house a hedgie while cleaning. It had been the home for her grand-daughter's hamster. Called her on the phone to thank her and we had a good laugh, good thing the top of the cage comes off the tray for P-k is too big to fit through the door
