For the Breeders out there.... - 2007/10/10 07:28 Ok guys, I have been thinking about this for a while and want your opinions.
Breeding lines and gene pool in general access is forever shrinking... What are your thoughts on the positives/negatives on introducing new blood lines into the general populace by importing some native hedgehogs???

Re:For the Breeders out there.... - 2007/10/10 09:18 Julie,

It's definitely something I (and others) have thought about. Unfortunately, there are many more negatives than positives at this stage.
First stumbling block is that imports of mammals are banned from Africa to the US.
Second (as if the first wasn't enough) would be you'd want a separate location for the new hedgehogs, and you'd have to breed them for a few generations before introducing the offspring to your domesticated herd.
There are more, but you get the idea. Honestly, there seem to be enough lines out there that you can outbreed without TOO much trouble...and that leaves the lovely wild hedgies to be able to hunt/eat/breed in peace.

Yes can you see me know on the back of an elephant with a small net at the end of a long, long pole trying to snatch wild hedgehogs as they run through the brush?!?!?!?! LOL

Well, we do now. LOL!

I can just see the kids book: 'Julie and the Wild African Pygmy Hedgehog'.
