Brother/Sister 1 Time Inbreeding - 2007/10/11 06:53 I was given a female that was accidently allowed to become impregnated by her brother before the lady could seperate the siblings. The lady freaked out and gave me the pregnant female who just had babies (a few days after she was given to me). She wasn't sure the female was pregnant but assumed the female would be when I told her she wasn't supposed to be housing them together even though they were both still young. I think the female is around 4-5 months old,but am not sure. Unfortunately, this lady didn't know enough about hedgies to even have them, but that's beside the point at this stage.

I've read many things about inbreeding hedgies and my question is, if this was a one time inbreeding, will the babies be all right or will they more than likely experience health problems down the road. They are very young and may not even make it to weaning age, but I want to be prepared in what to expect.

At least the lady has only the male left and cannot accidently inbreed anymore. I have coached her into using the Internet to research hedgies and have agreed to be her mentor and to help when I can. The definite good that has come out of this experience is the fact she is really willing and eager to learn and I helped to educate someone that otherwise would have went uneducated.

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice anyone can give me in this matter.

Re:Brother/Sister 1 Time Inbreeding - 2007/10/11 11:06 Tree,
Hard to know what to expect with an inbred litter. I'd say be prepared for more health troubles. That not certain by any means, and they very well may all be fine - but doubling up anything lurking as a recessive trait in the parents would more than likely present itself in the offspring.
It's great that you have her, and are able to give her the attention and care she needs.

Re:Brother/Sister 1 Time Inbreeding - 2007/10/11 11:30 if this was a one time inbreedingThat is the other part of the problem-if you do not know the origins you may have multiple generations who were inbred which would increase the chance of problems even more. I guess all you can do at this point is hope for the best but expect the worst.

Good luck and keep us posted. It was really good of you to take responsibility for this situation

Re:Brother/Sister 1 Time Inbreeding - 2007/10/16 08:24 I had a female that I bought from a petstore because you could tell she was VERY pregnant. She had 3 babies 4 days after I bought her. They were all huge, but for a smaller litter that is not surprising. However a week and a half after they were born one of the hoglets dropped dead. No signs of mom attacking it or anything, just died. I'm sure it had to do with some sort of inbreeding, or because she was very young.

You've got a young hedgie who may have troubles with larger babies and inbreeding working against you. Like said before they may be fine or they may not. You won't know until they get here. Good luck and hopefully that lady will stop breeding or learn something before she does it again.
