agressive - 2007/10/14 14:03
I just got my hedgie this morning, and when i was at the breeders i held him and let him walk on my hands a bit and he liked it, but when i got home and put him in the cage he wont let me near him without huffing and putting up his quills. And if he pees in the whell, is that normal and what should i do about it? thanks!

Congratulations on your new hedgehog
It is totally normal to have some transition time for your hedgehog to get used to you and his new home.
Some info to read:
http://www.hedgehogworld.com/content/view/52/42/
http://www.hedgehogworld.com/content/view/39/42/
http://hedgehogvalley.com/handling.html
Things to try Put a t shirt that you have worn in the cage so he will get used to your scent
Make sure the light is not too bright when you take him out
Hedgehogs usually sleep a lot during the day and come out at night so he may be grumpy cause he wants to sleep.
Most important thing is to be patient. Read the other threads in this category and you will find other things that have worked well for people.

I got my hedgie 3 weeks ago and she still huffs up into a ball when I go to pick her up. I usually just get a wash cloth and use that to pick her up so I don't get pricked with her quills. Then she usually unrolls for me.
Another way to get him to want to come out is meal worms.

Time and consistancy works in most cases. Make being with you a positive experience (low lighting, speak gently and go slowly, and a mealie now and then won't hurt ) and most likely he/she will come around. Patience is the key. The vast majority of pets don't jump all over you right away wanting your attention- you have to build a relationship first. Go slow and have fun- there's no rush...

thanks, ill try the wash cloth, but the thing is, i dont trust my pet store to get my meal worms from(all she gives me is bad stock and false information) so i can't get any kind of live food, is that ok?

I give freeze dried mealies to my girls and they love them. I tried the "Crickets in a Can", but they didn't go over well here. They smelled funny and girls wouldn't eat them. (blech)

I give the freeze dried ones too. The live ones are kinda gross.
I think the brand is Flukers, they come in a plastic container like kind spices come in.

Tessie goes nuts for Fluckers freeze-dried mealies. I found them at Petco in the reptile section.

Does anyone know the shelf life of the Fluker's freeze-dried meal worms? We just started using this brand. We store ours in a cool dry place just like they're supposed to be and they look fine, but I was wondering if they go bad after awhile anyway?
Thanks!

I would assume 6 months, since that is the shelf life of dry cat food.

NO!!!!!! Freezing them will kill them. You refrigerate them and it slows their body functions and puts them into a hibernation.

Dose freeze drying them lower their nutritonal value?? I've always wondered as I feed and grow my own mealies I would love to know for anyone else I might come across who isn't real fond of the little guys.

Flukers are so expensive. It would be great to have an alternative. I know freezing kills the meal worms but are they still eatable? I wonder if a hedgehog would eat them after they thawed out... and weren't crunchy.
Funny story: I had a unopened plastic bottle of Flukers meal worms and a bottle of the crickets in my spice cabinet because they are similar in size to the spice bottles and don't get lost behind bigger containers. My mom came to visit and was cooking in my kitchen. She reached in the cabinet for a spice, grabbed the worm bottle opened it, thinking it was another spice because the bottles are similar, and we could hear her yelling from downstairs. Now she checks everything to make sure it isn't a hedgie treat. I'm lucky I didn't end up with meal worm spaghetti.
She loves her grand pets but isn't fond of what they eat. lol
