Alternatives to Igloos ??? - 2007/10/15 20:59 Just wondering if anyone out there is using anything other then the igloos? Right now my hedgie house is looking good in brown plaid and "natural" looking toys. I'd really like to find a plastic log or cabin type thing that's a suitable size. I've considered the half logs and tree stumps made for reptiles but they seem rough and difficult to clean. I've started making a little house out of corrugated plastic but it needs a little tweaking. Any suggestions would be a great help. I'll post a picture as soon as I can... Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:Alternatives to Igloos ??? - 2007/10/15 21:34 My girl Cotton's first home was a wooden chinchilla box- and she loved it to death. However, I ended up taking it out eventually because she somehow peed on several sides of the house, and I wasn't sure how to sanitize that... I've heard if the hedgie gets mites or something similar, you'd have to dump something made of wood because it's porous and near impossible to sanitize unless you want to bake it. *~*Steph*~*

Re:Alternatives to Igloos ??? - 2007/10/15 21:44 I like the wooden chinchilla houses but I thought they would get dirty too quickly. They are so much better looking then the igloos though.

Here is the house I made. It's a trial run and I'll need to change a few things before it's usable. It needs to be black because the lighter colors allow too much light in. I think I'll have to cover the outside with another layer of something lighter for durability and looks (right now it's so goth!). The roof is covered in fabric and will need to be redone because the seams are exposed right now. I also need to figure out how to attach it, maybe hot glue?

Re:Alternatives to Igloos ??? - 2007/10/15 21:46 Also... if I permanently attach the fabric to the roof then I will not be able to clean it! Right now I like how the whole thing comes apart and lays flat. Maybe I can make a few different slipcovers for the roof?

That would be interesting-you could change the look of the whole house by changing the roof cover. Maybe you could use velcro to attach it? Ann

Re:Alternatives to Igloos ??? - 2007/10/16 12:17 Baron would never even look at the houses I had tried, he just dragged his sack out, put it under his wheel and shoved his fat butt under the wheel to sleep. (with it being about 2 inches off the cage floor he could really only fit his head and a bit under....) but I bought what Nancy from The Hedgie Den calls a "hat" for him and now he maneuvers around his cage under that.

Woke up this morning to see it resting just ontop of the spout of his water bottle and his food half under it...*sigh* such a lazy hog...

Though I guess if most of us had the choice and capability we'd all put our couches or lay-z-boys next to the fridge

By the way! You are very talented with pretty much anything you make ...my first attempt at corrugated plasting was Baron's Cage...I'm just glad the mesh cubing I found was small enough that I didn't need a 6inch wall...because somehow my 6 inch measurements came out to be around 3inchs and too big to fit on the inside of the cubing...

but I should let you know that I have chosen not to upload a picture of everything that I've tried to make. I have actually seen the hedgie hats and they look very comfortable indeed, I even tried to make one of those. But as I just mentioned... I purposely did not upload a picture. It was a disaster! It was definitely NOT CUTE.

So I'll probably just have to go ahead and order some from a more talented hedgie-hat-maker! Check out Ham's Blog !

Lol, that's so funny because the same thing happened to me when I had second levels for my C&C cages- on paper it was perfect, but in practice it was pretty messed up

Yeah, I like the look of that house! I got some covers for my pigloos from Nancy, and it makes them look so much nicer- I bet you'd be able to figure something out to cover the house- the rest of your stuff looks pretty nice

Re:Alternatives to Igloos ??? - 2007/10/19 21:18 I got an igloo cover to put onto the igloo. Wicket only goes into the igloo if it has its cover on, and his blanket inside. When its being washed he will sleep under the liner by his wheel. He also loves his hat. http://www.freewebs.com/wicket61807/index.htm

Re:Alternatives to Igloos ??? - 2007/10/20 07:46 I love my igloo cover. I just put it on again now that the weather is getting cooler. The cover is white, makes it look like a "real" igloo. (Time to get some more fall and winter themed fleece, come to think of it!)
