Coming to America Hedgie Style! - 2007/10/15 21:37
So I found this link somewhere and thought the article was really interesting- can anyone verify this information? As far as everyone who's been involved in hedgies for a long time knows, is this information provided pretty accurate?

Who knows, maybe the person who wrote it belongs to this site

Nice find on the article.
I noticed the line that said: "Two books in particular have been responsible for the spread of false and misleading information, and given that they have been the most widely distributed books in pet stores for more than 7 years, it's little wonder that we still have a long way to go."
The author didn't say which books those were. Although I didn't get either of mine at a bookstore, and like to believe I'm savvy enough not to get a "bad" one, I'd hate to think that I did.
Does anyone know what the "bad" books are? Or, more specifically to me, are either of mine the "bad" ones?
My books are: -- The Hedgehog: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet by Dawn Wrobel and Susan A. Brown (Hardcover - April 1, 1997) -- Ferrets, Rabbits and Rodents: Clinical Medicine and Surgery (Ferrets, Rabbits & Rodents) by Katherine Quesenberry and James W. Carpenter (Paperback - Dec 22, 2003)

one by D. Kelsey-Woods is full of misinformation. There are some nice photos in it though. I can't think of the other right off, the Dawn Wrobel one is fine, it's a bit dated, but it's ok. For the most current book out there with the most correct information, you don't have to look further than The Hedgehog Primer, which is written by Antigone Means of Hedgehog Valley www.hedgehogvalley.com

I have several books- The Hedgehog Primer has to be the best one out there yet. The one by Barron's seems to be not so great- and I have another book on the way from Amazon that was recommended as being decent, we'll see how that goes. I should have read Barron's more thoroughly before purchasing it... If I remember correctly, he talks about feeding raw meat to hedgies as a good idea, and if I'm not mistaken, they are susceptible to many raw food diseases that humans are
Something I just thought of... Has there been a book review article or post written? I know in general The Hedgehog Primer is recommended- and for good reason too! But maybe it'd be nice for those with experience with other books to discount the bad advice found in some books, or to advise new owners on out of date information, etc found in these resources. Just a thought.

"We now know that we have to increase light periods for hedgehogs (breeding animals in particular) to about 14 hours starting in October to reduce the risk of pre-hibernation stupor"
Is this true? Because up here in central Alberta I don't think we get 14 hours of light in October..infact I know for a fact we don't because it gets dark around 7pm and the sun doesn't fully rise until around 8amish (unless, of course, there's just a huge sun blocker infront of my apartment building...)

By light, it can be artificial or natural so if you have the lights on inside, that counts too.

Yes. This is a very good book. Very informative and lots of good information!
I don't have 'The Hedgehog Primer' .
I emailed Tigs a few weeks ago to ask how much shipping to the uk would be for a book and 5 hedgebags, but I never got a reply.
I'll need to try again.
