Relocation of European Hedgehogs - 2007/10/19 16:34 In an small Hebridian island off the coast of Scotland they have been having a major problem with hedgehogs eating rare birds eggs.

The European hedgehog isn't native to the island and was introduce in the 1970's by one person, to control the slugs in his garden. Since then the hedgehogs population exploded and have become a real problem.

I remember in 2003 when a cull was ordered (hundred of hedgies were killed ), but due to a mass outcry from the members of the public, the decision was overturned.

They now humanely trap the hedgies and release them on the mainland into a more hedgehog friendly environment. So far, over 800 hedgehogs have been relocated.

The numbers of hedgehogs in the uk are seriously declining so this seems like a much better idea to me.

You can see videos of this report at this link.
